The smaller muntjac buck

Grabbed the opportunity presented by a dry morning to get out early and sit at the corner of the cover crop field to see what might turn up.

Sure enough, at around 07:15 the smaller muntjac buck appeared, entering from the side of the field and then fortunately made his way towards me.

I had left the dogs tied up to a post and rail fence, so I could take advantage and kneel down to wait for the buck to get closer. He heard the shutter but didn't seem too put out, eventually ending up about 15-20 yards away.

These two shots are not the greatest, but I've included them because they show the incredible length of a muntjac's tongue. I know in Charles Smith-Jones book he has a photo of a muntjac using its tongue to clean out the sub-orbital glands, but this is the first time I've caught a photo like this.

These photos were taken a couple of weeks ago.
If I'd been home today I'd have been out with the camera, so I'm hoping the weather Gods smile on us later in the week!
