Tyres for large SUVs

Having just replaced the tyres on my Shogun, I thought this might be of use to anyone else with stupidly-large boots on their truck? I was limited for choice (and held to ransom on price!) by the 285/55 18 original tyre size, so had a bit of a dig about and found this comparison chart on the owners forum:

Tyre code Diameter Circumference Difference

285/55 R18 771 mm 2422 mm 0 %
265/60 R18 775 mm 2435 mm 0.58 %
245/65 R18 776 mm 2438 mm 0.65 %
255/60 R18 763 mm 2397 mm -0.97 %
305/50 R18 762 mm 2394 mm -1.1 %
275/55 R18 760 mm 2388 mm -1.43 %
295/55 R18 782 mm 2457 mm 1.43 %
275/60 R18 787 mm 2472 mm 2.14 %
255/65 R18 789 mm 2479 mm 2.34 %
295/50 R18 752 mm 2362 mm -2.4 %

Best choice for me was the 255/60 18 as both the range of choices increased dramatically, and the price per tyre plummeted. The difference in OD is negligible for all practical intent, as is the difference in tyre tread width. Hope this is of some use to anyone else looking to change tyres

I changed the wheels and the tyres on my Disco from an 18" wheel to a 16" wheel. This allowed me to fit mud tyres. Previously it had something akin to racing slicks that were useless on anything but gravel/tarmac.

I wanted to keep the overall diameter of the wheel identical so that I didn't have issues with speedo/mileage and body clearance.

I found this calculator very useful:

A 16-inch tire will let you use a tire with a taller and softer sidewall, which not only gives a smoother ride, but by absorbing some of the bumps and pressure, the tread carries less of this, so the tires last much longer.

There was a chap I met who moaned that his Porsche Cayenne could not have offroad tyres fitted.
And I was only the engineer doing the cockpit so dont blame me.

There's an argument to be made that any guy who buys a Cayenne and then complains he can't go off-road needs to be slapped purple with his own severed arm. Preferably the very arm that held the hand that signed the papers on that piece of crap in first place
