Shortening the barrel on a .30-06

I've just managed to get my hands on a split mint Tikka M695 in .30-06, only had 200 rounds through it but it's not threaded. Going to stick a mod on it for obvious reasons, but wondering about having it shortened at the same time. I realise top end performance could be lessened by shortening it, but just fancy it a little less pokey in length. Current factory barrel is 22". How much can I get away with lopping off - 2 or 3" ?
I'm telling Captain - from the Wee'est of men.

    So would I.
Just get a Dpt over barrel moderator, very light and effective and not too much forward of the muzzle.

cut it to 20" , it'll be fine

or get a 20'' 308 which is even more fine!

    Why turn a 30/06 into a .308?

I've just waited 6-7 months for two new Tikkas because I wanted longer barrels.

If you shorten it too much the muzzle blast in the moderator will approach 300 Win Mag levels, not good for the life of the moderator. I would get an over barrel model as advised earlier.
If you retain original length it can also be shot comfortably without the moderator.
