    Glorious 12th

Just out of interest how many people are out on the grouse tomorrow and what part are you playing.

  2. #2
Not out until the 24th will be loading.

Sadly not; previous years have seen me shooting over pointers in the Lammermuirs. It was always fantastic to be out, although as our host was less mobile latterly we felt we should try to position him where he might get the chance of a driven shot. For those of us with dogs this involved seriously long walks & wide arcs through waist-high heather to get to the good bits with the wind in the right direction. You certainly knew that you'd done something by the end of it.

It's twenty-four years since I shot driven grouse. Best sport to be had in UK shooting field. Just glad I did it when it was inexpensive.

I was suppose to be on Wolsingham today but they cancelled due to a poor first hatch, I am on Whitfield tomorrow on 200+ brace day and I am looking forward to it

Been loading today. A bit sticky being hot but the wind helped. Nice to be back on the moor.

Is there still a race to get the first grouse on tables of London restaurants for lunch?

Nah! Like, the accolade of serving the "best in show" at Smithfield at a particular carvery, these somewhat Patrician pursuits have been superceeded.

Nowadays by the the altogether more socially inclusive race, in the Blair era, between Asda and Morrison's to get the first Cadbury's Creme Eggs into their supermarkets after Christmas.

And before that, even, the ever more, and the typically Plebian Thatcherite era, proletarian pursuit of November's "Beaujolais Nouvea" scrambles pre Channel Tunnel and Eurostar.
