Not been on for a while but I thought I would introduce the new pup...
Not long had him
His name is Scout
An English Springer Spaniel

Scout is just over 18weeks old now
This was the last track I videoed last week
at 17weeks old approx
short 3hr old track just starting to slow down a little.. but so energetic... joys of training a Springer...

Nice to see Richard,
looking forward to seeing his progress and just goes to show how easy this training is and no specialist dog needed,
you just need to have the time to put into the training as it's a bit more time consuming than normal Gundog training.
good luck with him

Tony

Cheers Tony.....

Jimmy
lab is coming on tremendous now only 3 and really coming into his own

As for Scout
I needed another spaniel for shooting... seen this litter born and chose scout at 1 day old
had input on how he was raised and got him at 12 weeks old due to life circumstances delaying his arrival
and seen the potential in him plus I think I am at the stage now where I need a second dog for deer work
so will multi use him and see how we go
hope all is well with you bud..

Tidy matey I've got to admit I've an eye for that lab of yours as he's a good stamp of a dog.
Ps ..... ya a better man than me to be able to pick a pup at a day old what process did you use or was it I'll have the fist that squeaked lol
Alb
Jimmy
Ps... need 2 dogs for ya tracking? Bloody hell how many a day ya doing? A lab will work all day every day fed and kept right so to need a second dog jeez it must be full on

No hard and fast rules to picking this pup
i liked the dam and seen her work over the last year
The sire looks good too.. just wanted the right markings and pup chose... big difference was having an input on how he was raised...

Jeez matey wouldn't like to think I was picking a pointer pup off colour at a day old !!
All the best with it anyway

Nice one, I see the old quartering trate is still in there, will he move away from this and stick to the track as he gets older ?

I have two questions. Firstly how do you lay the track? Do you just tie the cleaves to your shoes and walk to lay a trail? I have some fallow and roe that I could do this with. Secondly why do I see tracking dogs on leads so much Is that the normal procedure?

Cracking lookimg dog btw.

Hi Rasputin
i use scent shoes
just bolt the hooves in place and tie the shoes to your own boots then start to walk from where you want the track to start from
then remove them at the end of the track
you can put the scent shoes with hooves still attached back into the freezer until you need again

i use a tracking lead for many reasons
mainly to keep control of the dog when tracking
it helps keep the dog on the track when in training
so when the dog wanders off the track.. you can just stand still and wait for the dog to come back to the track or encourage the dog back to the track
dog will only go as far as the long line will allow it
helps stops the dog chasing birds rabbits deer whilst in training
It allows you to govern the speed on the track as well if you have a fast working dog
and can act as part of the trigger for your dog to realise it has work to do when it sees the lead come out and attached to it

The vids are great stone. Keep it up, it would be great to follow the training progression every 4 weeks or so.
