Castello del Terriccio
The ‘castle of the land’ with breathtaking views over the Tyrean Sea and of Elba, Corsica, Capraia, and Gorgona, Castello del Terriccio is one of the largest estates in Tuscany. The estate traces its roots back to the Etruscan era when its strategic seaside location proved to be an ideal place from which to keep watch for pirates heading toward the coast. Still visible, the ruins of the Terriccio Castle date to this era.
The estate’s real history, however, begins in the 13th century when the Counts of Gaetani acquired the estate, building the farmhouses and wine cellar that still stand today. In its heyday in the 19th century, the estate was self sufficient, supporting 600 people. In the late 1700s, the Gaetanis sold the estate to a Polish prince, who in turn sold it to the family of the present owner in 1921.
Specifics of offering
The exclusive package includes the invitation to stay for four days and three nights as a private guest of Castello del Terriccio in the winery’s guesthouse, La Marana. La Marana benefits from an almost constant sea breeze – the inspiration behind the name of one of the estate’s white wines, Con Vento, literally ‘with the wind’. From its covered terrace, swimming pool and bedrooms the house boasts gorgeous views across the vineyards, olive groves and down to the sea. La Marana’s staff extend the winery’s hospitality, with meals crafted from local produce.
