    270 Win & N160

Any 270 folks using N160 with 130g heads? I use N160 in the 243 and ideally use the same powder on a 270, burn charts put it right in amongst 4831/RL19/RL22 etc so wondered what results people are getting.

    Cheers

I found n165 a little better, was my rifle preferred 150gn bullets. also would have thought 160 far too slow for a 243, most people i know go for 140 , or 540 for a 243. I guess that doesnt really help if your looking at a tub full of 160 ! good luck.

N160 is a very good powder for heavier 243 bullets (85 grains & above) as is Alliant Reloder 22, they give great velocity with good case fill & low pressures.
N160 is also ok for 270 with 130 grain bullets too. Particularly with a long barrel rifle. Again decent velocity - around 300ft/sec, low pressure & case fill.

I use 85g and 90/95 gr in 243 with N160, get great accuracy and good velocity, the 270 has a 24" tube and I will start with 130gr ammo so sounds like N160 could be a good starting place.

NellyT, looking at the Vihtavouri charts (edition 12) 130g soft point, a starting load of 51.5 of N160 produces 2779 fps, and up to a maximum load of 58g of N160 produces 3083 fps.

Looking at my Sierra reloading manual it shows a bullet weight of 140g SBT #1845 and using a starting load of 45.6g of N160 produces 2660 fps, 47.8 g of the same produces 2770 fps, and the maximum of 50g of the same produces 2800 fps, however as already commented on N165 appears to give better fps, if that if what you are looking for. For my part I use N160 for both my .243 & .270

    I hope that assists you

    good luck

Cheers Patrick, ws looking at my Nosler manual and Viht charts, not really chasing the last few fps in velocity but a solid accurate load.

N160 (55.0grs approx.) is fine with 130gr in .270, and works just as well in the .243 100gr. The same can be said of the slower IMR, Hercules. and Hodgdon lines too. N165 works better in the 150gr.

These are probably the only 2 calibres that a single powder will work well with, so stick with what you have. That's said in the context of a mere handful of the standard calibres in common use in the UK. Most reloaders take the easy option now, so you'll find plenty of genuine Sierra reloading data for both on-line. No problem with VN160 at all.

Viht. N160 excellent propellant with 95gn Nosler BT in a .243Win. 44.5gns in my Steyr Mannlicher stutzen really does the business.

have tried several powders for 270 but n160 was by far the best
use 54.5gr for 130gr Hornady interlocks and 60gr for 100gr Speer sp bullets
