    Sika Stag with Roe call

Last night, my mate to his surprise, managed to call and shoot a yearling sika stag with the Nordik Roe Call.
He though he would try his luck for roe and had just set up and only called three times when the stag came out of the trees about 100m away and came into 30m.
Can anyone suggest why the stag would come to the call first of all it being a roe call and secondly, its too early for sika to be rutting and normally they come to the challenge of another stag.

Deer are naturally curious creatures and will come for a look at anything unusual. I tried a 'Grunter' in the Fallow rut last year. Didn't see a single fallow but called in a couple of nice Muntjac bucks who came to see what all the noise was about!
