    Wild boar best practice guides

After an absence of some 300 years wild boar are present in England once again. Coming across boar or their signs is likely to be a new or uncommon experience for many people and landowners and managers may have to become used to the presence of these animals on their land.

In 2008 the Feral wild boar in England action plan was published by Defra. The plan, which can be downloaded in pdf form here
, describes Government policy regarding wild boar; one of the requirements is the publication of a range of authoritative advice relating to the species.

The Deer Initiative (DI) has now launched a series of six Best Practice Guides which can be downloaded free of charge at www.wild-boar.org.uk
    .

You are reminded that the Food and Environment Research Agency is hosting the 8th Annual Wild Boar Symposium in York from 1 to 4 September 2010. The website has now been updated since the last newsletter. For more information click here
    .
Risk assessment course for deer managers

The DI is running a course entitled Deer Management – Risks & Liabilities on 30 September. The course aims to explain the risks involved and how they can be minimised. Guidance will also be given on the completion of risk assessments and the drafting of stalking licences.

The course, delivered by John Thornley OBE and Charlie Parkes OBE, co-authors of the book Deer Law & Liabilities, is certificated and candidates will be provided with a computer disc containing relevant information including a draft risk assessment. Signed copies of the book will also be available at a discount.

The course will take place at the Village Hall, Great Barton, Suffolk, IP31 2NR - 12:30pm registration for 1pm start; cost £35.50 per person. To book a place please contact David Hooton at the following address:

    Bury St Edmunds
    Suffolk IP28 6XD

Please make cheques payable to The Deer Initiative.
    Important changes to firearms law

As of 28 July the age at which people may purchase or hire certain firearms or ammunition will be raised from 17 to 18 years of age. Firearms law will also change as necessary to ensure that adult or parental supervision is applied to under-18s. These changes are taking place so that UK firearms law complies with European law. For a briefing on these changes, please visit the Firearms section of the BASC website here

    ThermaCELL insect repellent

This new device is a must-have piece of kit for all stalkers and fishermen. Not much bigger than a large mobile phone, the ThermaCELL insect repellent uses a revolutionary technology to release a continuous stream of repellent vapour into the air over an extended period of time.

A small butane cartridge powers a tiny heat source, which warms a mat saturated in allethrin, a copy of a naturally-occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemums. The vapour given off forms a cloud which creates a five square metre insect-free zone around the user.

BASC Deer officer Chris Brooks says; "This product works fantastically well for sitting in a highseat or quietly mooching along a river bank; however for normal stalking you move out of the protected zone too quickly. Barbeques also become much more pleasant as the protected area will cover a patio or picnic area quite easily. If the wind gets up enough to blow away the vapour cloud, I found that is generally breezy enough to keep the midges away too. This great new gadget is now a permanent feature in my stalking bag and I highly recommend it as one of the greatest innovations in outdoor kit for a long time."

Cost is around £29 from our stalking partner BushWear
    or from Everything Outdoors

Public opinion survey on EU animal welfare policy

Please take part in an international public opinion survey that could affect fieldsports, before it closes on 31 July. Shooters need to make the message clear that we in the UK should decide what animal welfare rules apply to wild animals, not the EU. See the Key Issues section of the BASC website here
for what to do and how to do it.

Firearms law debate - lobby your MP

BASC is calling on its members and others who shoot to lobby their MPs in advance of the Parliamentary debate on firearms laws in the wake of the murders in Cumbria.

A facility is available through the BASC website which allows people to look up their local MP by postcode, constituency name or the name of their MP and find out whether he or she is supportive or opposed to shooting. An email text is also available which can be edited - and altered if desired - to send to your local MP stating your views. Full details and a link to the email campaign page can be found on the BASC website here

That'll be the DI out of DEFRA getting in on the act - now obviously the experts on boar as well. Funding for deer based projects must be running out so another revenue stream needs to be cultivated.
