OK, it's not stalking. But it's a telephone scam - just to let you all know

The new telephone 'scam' has arrived.

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT,
informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00, or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.

The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with
Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!

I asked the guy's name - the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152 0800 0800 152 .

Obviously the fella realized I wasn't believing his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this.

AND HE DID!!
My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing
- until he phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then.

I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.

He hung up.

Did 1471 & phoned his fictitious 0800 number not recognised.

I phoned the police to let them know, I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please let as many friends & family aware of this.

This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800152 0800 800152 which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple , he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable. Obviously, if this scam is real, once they have your credit/debit card details, there is nothing to stop them cleaning out your account.

This one has been going on for years, the old nigerians they love a good scam! The bare faced balls of it, unfortunately it does work on people.

I got scammed a few weeks ago at Sainsburbys Supermarket car park when I was loading my shopping into the boot of my car 2 large breasted scantly clad young ladies approached me and asked if they could help load my bags in the car and while one of them bent over displaying her breasts the other stole my plastic wallet valued at 99p this happend to me on Monday Wednesday and Friday I think they are there on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well but it takes me a few days to recover from the experience. A word of advice plastic wallets are available on Ebay at .99p inc postage.

On a more serious note I did get a call from a Pakistani or it sounded like a pakistani who said he was from AOL and that i had a virus on my P.C and was i sat in front of my computer, and that he could remove it by his instruction quite easily.
So I give him some instruction of my own I told him to go forth in short jerky movements
Apperently this scam allows them to access your computer and your online banking so beware.

works on old people all to well... my mom got stung with a help the animals one. They had got hold of a mailing list and started phoning through the list. They wanted £5 to save a rescue centre somewhere since 'she had given to them before' and as soon as the card details were given they started draining the account £50 a time. The police told my mum that there were lots of scams that works in this sort of way, worst of it was the bank to ages to sort it out.

Mannlicher ~

A similar thing happened to my mother, except in a Tesco's Car Park, she was loading stuff into her car when a worried man approached her, said he had just had a phone call his wife had been rushed to Guildford Hospital and did my mother know the way, without thinking Mum rushed to the front of the car and put it in her sat nav showing the way to the hospital...

Having done this mum went to the boot of the car where her purse was open and no credit card, she then phoned it through and it had been used in the hole in the wall about 100 m away they had obviously seen her pin in Tesco's however they must have been serious amateurs as they were on every CCTV camera in and around Tesco's so it didn't take long to find out who they were...

Idiots, however some are smarter...

I have had one a few times allegedly from the Inland Revenue who have `re-viewed my fiscal activities` and wish to give me a few hundred pounds refund.
I send these immediately to the I. R. `phishing` department who send me a reply saying that they DO NOT do such activity on-line.

HWH.

I can stop all these things happening to anybody.
Just send me your ban account details ect and job done.
I also have an uncle in nigeria who's got $900000000000000000000000000000000000 in an account going begging.
For £50 I'll let you claim it.
Speak to you soon.

Interesting first post!

This has been doing the rounds for at least a year, however unlike most of these 'circulars' that get reposted and emailed everywhere over and over again this one does at least have some credibility behind it.

BT Unpaid Bill Phone Scam Warning

Original post above is just a copy/paste of this.

Welcome to the site Martin, any chance of an intro? ;)
