A Scottish trip to remember - Part 1

Back in November I happened to mention to the boss if he had any contacts in Scotland for hind shooting. Within an hour I had two days booked for the end of January, along with accomodation and the boat from Northern Ireland. The destination was Glen Clova. I had also mentioned to a Scottish friend, who I got to know off the forum, that I was heading over and passing by him. This led to a very kind invite to call in and try for my first Roe Doe!

Fast forward to January and much temptation in work, I decided to change to a Blaser R8 Professional in 308 and topped it off with a Swaro Z6 and DPT moderator. The rifle was finally ready to zero on the Friday, just in time to familiarise myself with it before getting the last boat on Saturday night.

After a rough sleep on the boat and car, I was finally on the outskirts of Kilmarnock and ready to go. We made our way to the snow covered ground and began our stalk. After 30 minutes the first Roe of the day was in the Swarovski binos. We made our way into 200 yards where a 3 further Does and 1 Buck came out of cover. Unfortunately they moved on before a clear shot presented itself. Not deterred by this we continued on with fresh snow beginning to fall, then it happened. We spotted a buck in velvet along with two does at 135 yards. Not wanting to miss out again I promptly got the Blaser onto the quad sticks and sent 150GR of Federal Power Shok into the engine room. First Roe Doe down. Estatic.

The snow was now coming down at a heavy rate and we decided to head back to the car and drive to the nearest access point, saving a long drag. As we hurried back to the car suddenly 2 Does moved out of cover. I was given the go ahead and again unclicked the Z Aim Pro sling and positioned the R8 on the sticks. The Doe was at 160 yards and dropped on the spot after another engine room shot. The morning couldn't have went any better and the new rifle was performing brilliantly. I thanked my friend again for the kind offer and great stalk, better than I ever could have imagined. Then began the next stage of my journey, onto Clova with heavy snow falling. Not fun.

I arrived around 4pm and checked into my room. The gear was left to dry out and I gave the Blaser a quick wipe down ready for the morning. I ventured to the bar for a chilled pint of Heverlee and an excellent 'Fish box' before having an early night.
