Cost of UK stalking?

Hi all
I am new to the idea that I may be able to shoot deer. I have long felt that it is an expensive form of shooting to do.

It all mounts up and is therefore excludes a lot of people form being able to enjoy the sport.

I have a young family and find it hrad to justify paying £60-£150+ for a few hours out on the ground, where I may have to pay more for shooting an animal, AND at the end of that you don't get to take what you've shot home with you unless you pay even more. All you get is the head, I'm not interested in trophys, I know a lot are.

For the cost of a few hours stalking in the UK my whole family can book flights to see my inlaws and can shoot boar and deer there for nothing.

I find it hard to understand why it costs so much over here, even if your helping with a cull. Your doing the land owner a service, and it costs you a fortune. Can someone please explain this to me?

Is it like most things, who you know?

Thanks for reading this

In response, If your being accompanied by a landowner/employee then you are not doing them a service you are using their service... I would suggest that 99% of employee's of landowners would provide a better service to the estate than a novice would therefore i don't believe you are offering a viable service...

If you want to argue the non accompanied side of things, Estates have costs, most also want to try and make money at least to cover these costs, deer are a commodity and therefore why not sell it especially when the demand is there, hence this demand dictates the cost to you...

If you want a guide of stalking costs I think there are some very low cost options in my opinion in the Stalking Opportunities section...

Sorry mate but stalking here is very cheap what type of flight doyou go on a hang glider. But i am sure if you can get a flight shoot boar and deer for less than 60 pounds you could start selling it to us pour brits i certainly would go boar shooting for twice that much .Hope you get plenty of shooting over there and please let us see your resluts.

I always felt that stalking in the UK is very cheap especially when you compare it to game shooting especially grouse at up to £70 a bird when you can go and pay for the stalk and shoot a roe doe for £95  all things must be put in perspective also where are the in-laws living when you can shoot for free?

I understand your argument where the shooter is accompanied, and that is a fair point.

Would you agree that the sport is prohibitavley expensive for a lot of people go get into?

Would you think that for someone to be unaccompanied they would need DSC 1 as a minimum? There you have aprox. £300 before you get out.

I know a few people that I shoot with that would like to get into stalking but like myself can't justify the expense out of the family budget.

I'm with you on that one. I don't know what the right word is but elitest is the closest I can get. Anyone who can use stalking and cheap in the same sentence isn't short of a bob or two.

Craig,

to be honest change your friends lol...only kidding.

it will always cost when the demand far exceeds the supply.

this is why gold and diamonds are so expensive yet there is tonnes of the stuff in reserve.

it is my goal to one day have thousands of acres of land and make the sport of stalking truly open to all classes.... for a fair fee.

Fine very was maybe not the best word to use and like you say grouse in £70+ a bird and to be honest i would say in that context that does make a doe very cheap for the day out compared to what you would need to spend on a day of grouse ;) and i know i would rather shoot a doe over a grouse any day.

It is my intention to do just that when I'm out of the forces in 2 years. I want to offer shooting to people who are like myself on a limited buget.

Surely DDM would help you solve some of your problems? Acess to stalking, courses as part of your resettlement package before they release you back into the wild etc? JC

I'm in the process of looking into that.

A friend is trying to get in with the DDM at the moment, seems easier said than done. It seems to be like a lot of forces sport, clickey.

Cb,

you need to be, as a rule, Staff/colour sergeant or above to do that... rank talks as they say

The expense of shooting can be justified / summed up very easily.

It costs the ammount that people are prepared to pay. supply and demand, is it cheap? is it expensive? that is all relative to your personal circumstances however the price people charge is relative to the price people pay.

simple economics.

Yes its like most things... who you know!!! Trouble is "you need too live in the same country as your wifes' uncle"
Accessing shooting through the internet or through adverts is invariably a commercial exercise and you pay through the nose. Look at pheasant shooting... commercial internet ads. expect £35 a bird as "going rate" Many of us enjoy our sport at about 30% of the commercial rate...ie avoid the parasites of agents and commercialism and shoot at cost price but you need too be local, native and fit in and contribute time and effort or have a wifes uncle!
