.257 x 87 grain bullets.

Tell me more
That sounds interesting to a wider audience

Was just looking for a flat base bullet to try instead of the boat tail GKs. I didn’t realise when i bought them that they were varmint bullets.
Thought I’d let the Klench have them, if he was still looking.
Ken.
PS. takbok, it’s surprising how much a bullet will swage down when fired in a too small bore

Just read klenchblaize’s post, seems he’s full up, apart from Bergers, so, will let these go to .25-06.
Thanks,Ken.

I love my 87grn Speer hotcore in my .25-06 .... very efffective on roe so far
No runners

The 87 gr bullet was created for the .250 Savage to achieve 3,000 fps, for advertising purposes.

It is an effective bullet on deer under 150 lbs , and not a varmint bullet at all. The Savage 1899 in .250 was a deer and longhorn rifle, and Charles Newton designed it around a 100 gr bullet.

In the .250 rifle, 34 to 35 grains of H4895, W748, RL15, or Varget will do over 2,950 fps with best accuracy.

Southern, the 87 grain bullets i bought were Sierra and it said ‘Varmint’ on the box.
I had previously tried the 87 gr. Speer Hot-cor, at slow speeds, but they weren’t as accurate in my rifle as the 90gr. GameKings.
Regards,Ken.

kenbro, you are right about today there being more and better .25 caliber bullets than in the 1930s.
Are you using them in a .250 Savage?

A lot of folks will use the 75 and 87-gr bullets in the .257 Roberts for varmints like prairie dogs and coyotes. The Speer Hot Cor 87-gr is what I have, and load them for a Savage 99 Deluxe, and an 1899 takedown for whitetail deer.

I use the Hornady 100-gr Interlock bullets in both my Savage 99 and my .257 Roberts. There are so many good 100-gr bullets, but also use 110 Accubond, 115 Partition, 117 Hornady RN, SST and SPT in my Roberts.

I like the quarter bore. Mine’s a 25-45. When the barrel was 24” long I was getting 3000 + fps with 90 grain Gamekings and 2836 fps with 100 grain Prohunters. 25.4 grs. powder.
Still experimenting now I’ve had the barrel chopped to 20”.
I read that the 90 grain Gameking was designed as a varmint cartridge, but, it worked so well at lower sppeds on thin skinned game, Sierra decided it was a dual purpose bullet.
I did a lung shot on a fallow deer last year at 184 yards. It did a back flip and ran nowhere.

Below is one of my 99s. This one a 32-40. Love ‘em.
Ken.

I see you can now get eld-x in 110grn for .25 !
I’d be keen to try them once I get thru my current stash
