    Lymes disease

Got munched by ticks over the summer - one of the bites came up
in a big rash. Been feeling achy / flu/ headache for the last couple of weeks. The tall controller sent me off to the doctor - out of hours service at western general Edinburgh. Call straight to infectious disease consultant - he's diagnosed Lymes disease and now on two week course of anti biotics. He did n't want to wait around with blood tests etc -they are not conclusive in any event. Get on with the antibiotics and go back if no improvement.

Hopefully it should clear up quite quickly.

If you get similar symptoms get yourself to the doc.

    Yeah I will second that,
I went to the USA hunting in 2000 and had a swelling on my fingers and before I knew I had passed right out in my flat
Woke up and went by taxi to the nearest hospital in B÷blingen near Stuttgart, Germany on Sat morning skeleton shift and was put straight into a ward on an antibiotic drip for 9 days it was unpleasant. Fingers still swell a bit with hot weather even today. Bacterial infection of the bloodstream.

Caught Lymes Disease early last year.

not trying to be a scare monger, but PLEASE take it serious. It can KILL you or disable to you for good. A 2 weeks course is only the beggining as a rule. I had a 6 week course to take.

Met a lady at the CLA last year in the BDS tent and another in the NGO tent, both of whom had had or still got the infection. The lady in the NGO tent had not be diagnosed properly. Result was the loss of vision in one eye and paralysed and in a wheelchair. The other lady was overcoming the infection but had the same rash on her face that I had.

Hope you make a good and full recovery, take care.

Crikey matey, that's bad news. Sincerely hope the antibiotics clear it up pronto.

I've been aching like a bugger for weeks and had attributed it to work/ageing...but as we've 'shared some ground' I might have a rethink, especially as I've been a bit of a tick magnet of late.

Can't pin-point where you were when you got the bite which blew up can you?

Anyway, get well soon and anytime you fancy a trip up here just yell.

I might add gentlemen that not all infected tick bites produce a large red swollen rash that extends out from the bite centre.

I had nothing except the tick I found latched to my thigh to indicate that I had contracted Lymes. My first symptoms where feeling very very tired all the time, and then blurred vision with aching joints.

Mind you at 54 you get all of that after a hard days stalking and to many whiskies but joking aside treat it seriously. Just as an aside the asst manager in our local hardware store stopped me a short time after I was on medication, and his 3 yr old son contracted Lymes after a holiday in the New Forest. Poor kid ended up in Great Ormond Street Hospital, and was pretty ill with it. He's ok now, but Lymes is on the increase and as stalkers we should be vigilant with this disease.

Just finished 2 months of a 3 month course of Doxycycline, feel like crap most of the time, bad headaches, no strength, muscle twitches, blurred vision, tinitus, and neck muscles and jaw are stiff most of the time. Going to see a specialist tomorrow morning about my headaches.

    its a HORRIBLE thing

Ive been out on the hill today with guests, 4 hrs later and Im done, bad shakes and feels like Im wearing a pair of divers boots

    Dan,

sounds like you are still feeling too many affects after 2 months. Have they tried changing the medication? Although I was put on Doxycycline there is another drug that they use which Morena (norman) on this site told me about, and often use this after a course of Doxycycline. I would go back to the quack and get it sorted mate.

We did a great deal of stalking for 2 years above Ullapool and the area is alive with ticks and Lymes is fairly common I believe. Hope you improve soon.

I was originally told that it was going to be a 2 month course then injections for the 3rd month. Il find out more tomorrow morning. They Doc reckons (looking back on my records) that Ive had it 18 months, itl take a bit of shifting but they are pretty positive.

If Im honest I do feel better than I did, i was right low for a while there. The intesity of the headaches has reduced ALOT, I no longer need to take Migrleve for them, I havent had the blurred vision for a week or so and I generally feel a little healthier. Still knackered most of the time though.

A link worth reading regarding treatment and symptoms...
