    Oh how advertising stretches fact.

If these are legally licence free they will be marked "PMR 446". They operate at UHF with a maximum power of 1/2 watt. No problem with 5 mile range as long as you are in "line of sight". In a dense wood you will be lucky to achieve 500 yards.

There are 8 channels, don't let the blurb tell you otherwise. They use tone access, the transmitting one transmits a sub audible tone, the receiving on will only turn on when the tone is present. There are 38 tones some advertising implies that their sets have 8x38 channels. If someone else is using the same channel but with a different tone you will not hear them but it is possible to transmit over the top of them. Not really a problem unless in a built up area.

Go ahead and get them as long as you are aware of the limitations.

We use 4 on our shoot and apart from poor reception in and around the woods they are a good and useful tool.

If you buy them as separates remember to check that the channel/tone combinations are the same, otherwise you will end up talking to yourself !
