Apologies for the very short notice, and the absolute urgency of this thread.

You need to contact your MP today (Tuesday 9th October).

You need to ask them to support an amendment to the Offensive Weapons Bill that is due to be submitted by Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown on Wednesday 10th October.

Please see below the amendment for enhanced security that will be tabled by Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown by close of play on Wednesday evening. This needs as many MPs signatures as possible. However, your MP does not need to personally sign a copy. If they let Sir Geoffrey’s office in the Commons know they would like their names added that is sufficient.

Sir Geoffrey’s office number in the Commons is 0207 219 1294 and his assistants are Matthew and Judith.

Please pass these details onto your MP, don’t rely entirely on email, try a phone call.

We will NEVER get another chance at this, it’s now or never.

As a reminder, the shooter friendly MPs that spoke up in our defence at the 2nd reading are as follows, however if you MP has been non-committal then it’s still worth a shot.

Sir Geoffry Clifton-Brown (no need to contact)
Mr Johnathan Djanogly (no need to contact)

These amendments remove the proposed prohibition of high energy rifles such as .50cal from the Bill. They introduce a requirement for a certificate holder to install higher security measures i.e. the Level 3 security standard from Home Office guidance. Level 3 is the standard typically required for registered firearms dealers, museums and those who possess prohibited weapons. It includes a provision for an alarm with signalling.

Prohibition of certain firearms etc: England and Wales and Scotland

Delete clause 30 (ag) of the Bill to remove the ban on rifles over 13,600J muzzle energy and insert the following new clause:

Special security provisions for firearms

(NC ) A chief officer shall grant a certificate for a high energy rifle where the applicant has installed security measures equivalent to Level 3 of the Home Office Security Handbook.

For the purposes of this section “High Energy Firearm” means any rifle from which a shot, bullet or other missile, with kinetic energy of more than 13,600 joules at the muzzle of the weapon, can be discharged.

Prohibition of certain firearms etc: Northern Ireland

Delete clause 31 (ea) of the Bill to remove the ban on rifles over 13,600J muzzle energy and insert:

Special security provisions for firearms

(NC ) A chief officer shall grant a certificate for a high energy rifle where the applicant has installed security measures equivalent to Level 3 of the Home Office Security Handbook.

For the purposes of this section “High Energy Firearm” means any rifle from which a shot, bullet or other missile, with kinetic energy of more than 13,600 joules at the muzzle of the weapon, can be discharged.

Done! My MP is Kirstene Hair. I've sent the following, in case anyone wishes to copy it for their own use?

Dear (insert MPs name),

I would like to petition your support for an Amendment to the Offensive Weapons Bill that is due to be submitted by Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown tomorrow, Wednesday 10th October. The Amendment removes the proposed prohibition on legally-held rifles with a muzzle velocity of over 13600J, and instead calls for enhanced security requirements for any licensed firearms owner wishing to possess one for target shooting. In support of this Amendment, there have been no cases in the entire UK where a legally-held rifle of this type has been used to commit a crime, nor are there any realistic scenarios under which one would be of practical benefit in doing so, and the proposed move to prohibit them is both unnecessary, and unfairly removes the ability for those who demonstrate a good reason to possess and use one for legitimate sporting reasons to continue with their perfectly legal sport. As legal firearms owners in the UK, we are already subject to increased scrutiny, background checks, and are held to a higher level of accountability than non-firearms owners, and the proposal to ban this type of firearm unfairly and unnecessarily penalises us.

The Amendment is highlighted below for your convenience:

‘Delete clause 30 (ag) of the Bill to remove the ban on rifles over 13,600J muzzle energy and insert the following new clause:

For the purposes of this section “High Energy Firearm” means any rifle from which a shot, bullet or other missile, with kinetic energy of more than 13,600 joules at the muzzle of the weapon, can be discharged.’

I would respectfully ask that you support this Amendment, and thus allow the sport of .50cal target shooting to continue without further erosion of our rights as firearm owners. Many thanks for your anticipated support.

Done, although my MP seems to be very keen to follow the party line..

So does mine TBH - but the party line seems to be "these are big scary guns, imagine if someone stole one". And this amendment addresses that issue by enforcing higher security measures so I would like to think it will go through!

I dont even shoot .50 cal but man I have all my fingers and toes crossed... I might go buy one in celebration if it gets accepted haha!

If i could i would. But from my experience, once these things have been announced, they pretty much done and dusted.

Done. Had a response from my MP Tim Loughton ( Con, Shoreham and Worthing) that he was surporting the ammendment and had spoken to the Minister that day about it.

Thats awesome, good news! :D Hopefully a few others will do the same and the brakes will get put on the ban.

Had a response from my MP Tim Loughton

Good news. That's more than Kirstene Hair, Member of Parliament for Angus bothered her arse with. I got a standard 'Cheers, but I can't be bothered responding to you in person' template email. Mind you, her spineless abstention from the EU Referendum, and refusal to get involved with EDMs lets everyone know exactly what type of 'politician' she is

DONE - by email then follow up call at noon today to check. Despite marking it 'URGENT re Wednesday 10th October 2018 amendment to be tabled' etc. it had not yet been passed to my MP
