    Safe Backstop?

Yikes - sounds like it was a one in a million accident, but a salutory lesson for us all nonetheless:

The incident occurred Saturday in a forest region near Ljungby, some 155 miles south-west of the capital Stockholm.

Christ that's some round, thats what they call long range..

The Swedish Elk is an Älg and is what we might call a Moose.... yes/no? If yes why the pic of a Wapiti? (North American Elk) or is it a massive Red? ...by Scottish standards that is, probably a midget by South of England standards...

The Swedish lead bullet ban was meant to come into force on 1/1/2008, did it not?

My point being, is this grievous incident yet another proof of just how dangerously prone to ricochet mono-metals actually are?

I'd ban those for UK game shooting, if I could.

    Rubbish.

You're talking low velocity mono-metal, which is indeed bad for ricochet.

High velocity jacketed lead, open points, deform grossly at the least opportunity and then don't fly far at all. You really should know this. Though I'll concede both bonded core and partitions do have their problems.
