harness worn when stalking???

can anyone advice me weather my tracking dog should be wearing her harness( without tracking lead) when were actually stalking or just for the soul purpose of tracking? i ask this because i use her for rough shooting as well and wondered weather the harness in her mind would be asociated with deer there fore she would know what shes looking for and snif out the un seen deer?? regards brad

Personally I only put the harness on the dog when I wish him to track. The fitting of the harness and me encouraging him verbally is like a switch. I have used this "switch" since day one of this training and now whenever the harness is on his nose hits the ground.

Having the dog stalking with you with the harness on and just clipping on the leash with verbal encouragement may be enough to get him going but I will always prefer the fitting of the harness.

My own dog is solely a deer dog but from mates that have dual purpose dogs these dogs can distinguish between a rough shooting day and a stalking day. Most agree that to get the best out of dual purpose dog training in deer first is best.

nice one mate, sounds logical i have a gwp and shes pretty smart so should be able to tell the difference from stalking to rough shooting, regards brad

Personaly I don't think it will make one Iota to the dog wether it is wearing a harness or not to help it distinguish between stalking and shooting
what you may find is what the dog finds relative to the situation you put it in, that helps it to distinguish the difference
if you only put a harness on the dog whilst stalking
then the dog becomes accustomed to just stalking in a harness, but when you want it track then you put a leash on,
the dog will realise the difference and with the extra encouragement should gee it up a bit
it's when you start to cast the dog off is where the confusion may start in a less experienced trained dog, as it may not realise what you are asking it to perform
I suppose It's all about the training and training attitude
if you rush the dog into bird/rough shooting whilst still not very experienced in the deer tracking side of things you could end up with a very confused dog, that could tend to be a bit on the eager side as it is pushed to finding game and deer on the same level playing field before it is ready and cause it possibly to pull ahead or even run in
GWP's are pretty quick learners but also pretty quick on their paws and their natural working aggression can often override the discipline installed

I think the ritual of putting the harness on is as Gazza says "a switch". I use the same with my teckel as i did with the previous one. Both were A***holes on a lead, but put a harness on and you unleash the "tracking machine" pulling, sniffing, totally obsessed. Change back to collar, harness off and they "stand down".

My gundogs have found thier own "switch", guns and slips from under the stair cupboard, they go mental?

IN MY OPINION its vital not too confuse dog the dog associates, OR SHOULD an action in this case the harness, with a particular command asking it too do more will place doubt in the dogs mind leading to confusion and i suspect lack of confidence, keeping it simple ie harness only on when dog tracking installs a pavlovian reflex ,in the dogs mindset, hence it tracks withouut thinking, becoming second nature for dog and owner ,ive trained couple my gwps over yrs to BRINGSEL and found this way to be simple and effective,

harness worn when stalking?

I agree with gazza and doghound the act of put or even producing the harness flicks a deer switch.
Athur my wirehaired vis works as a picking up and beating dog and is a master of the long lost bird and he is a fairly close worker when I use him as a pointing dog.
When we stalk his attitude changes.perhaps the lack of other stimulii from the company of other people or dogs does it.
When I prepare for and take a shot for him is the worst part of his experience as he hates the sound of a rifle shot and virtually uses my leg as an ear defender.
BUT!! after the shot and when the harness is produced he virtually turns himself inside out with joy as he turns into radar deer detecting dog.
My advise for what its worth.
For an dual purpose dog is to put the harness/collar on as the track starts, this then becomes the deer trigger and the brain engages Formula rifle+harness = deer= fun
For the more specialised dog perhaps is is not so important and Stone is correct.
Any BMH or Hanoverian affectionados wish to discuss?????

well ill tell you what i do , i have my BMH xena on a over sash type lead and tracking collar whilst stalking so i have my hands free to glass or to take a shot , and when i need her to track i show her the bright red long line (she then goes nuts barking and so forth) and away we go !

same princible but different way of doing things , but being a BMH she has her snout to the ground 99% of the time anyway !

but i hasten to add she is a deer dog only !

Always used a harness with Todd, whether we are walking or stalking, never made a difference really. I am of the mind that BMH always have their nose on the floor scenting and having a collar round a dogs neck when it is head down most of the time puts too much starin on the neck. Todd has only ever had a harness and would now never wear a collar.

Now he is 5 this March and all I can tell you is that I have never had a problem with him wearing a harness from tha day he was a pup, and I am looking into getting another BMH to bring on behind him.

I'm a little confused here with this post

What is a sash type lead????
as I stalk with my dog with out any type of lead on her at all
I can still glass, take a shot or even give the command to sit as I stalk on by myself with out having to hav any physical contact and no time is lost or extra actions need when a bit of qiuck thinking and movements are needed
my dog can even stop for a crap in peace , with out me standing over her watching
but why is your dog acting crazy at the sight of a red leash , does it do the same if you use a different colour one??

Mine stops as I stop and backs away as I deploy the sticks so she ain't in the way
once a shot is taken she looks to see if I put a leash on her or not
If I do, she knows what the score is and gees up a few gears
If I don't then she either laughs or looks at me as if to say you effing xxxx
and we carry on stalking

I suppose that is the difference of having a dual purpose:D

Harness worn when stalking

Hi Stone
A sash lead is worn over the shoulder and attached to the dog,a style of lead much favoured by Teckle owners to stop the little darlings from taking those brave enough(possibly substitute mad for brave)by surprise and heading for the horizon. Heavy chains and wirerope have also been found to be effective but tend to tire out the handler before the Teckle

Cheers Kit
from that I take it Leec6.5 has not got control over his dog as for the reason of that type of leash

He should of got a Lab:D

got a lab as well but he is knocking on hence the bmh !

just because i stalk with her on a lead does not mean she is not trained , but when tracking long distance i wouldnt be with out her .

ive had her track a red stag (not shot by me ) shot through the liver at over 700m and the last 200m was through a swamp and at one point she was swimming from tree stump to stump off the lead , then brought it to bay while i was still 100m behind .

that is what she is trained to do , so please dont tell me i have no control over my dog!

only having a laff...hence the " :D "
why is it that new BMH owners seem to get on their high horse and start telling us how good their dog is
Christ I hope this ain't going to be the form for the next five years till another breed of deer dog comes into the frame:doh:
we are all dog owners or potential ones that normally post in this section
I hope they breed such a species of dog that the owners come with a sense of humour:D
best wishes
