    .260 or 7mm 08 project

I have a sako 75 action and now thanks to pierred a varmint stock, next step a fluted custom barrel was thinking along the lines of .260 or 7mm 08 i dont intend to use a moderator but may go for a brake.

My idea is to have one rifle that i can use for foxes right up to the heaviest woodland stags by the use of 2 scopes on q/d mounts one zeroed for varmint bullets the other for deer.
Never had either of these cal's before, so do you think what i am after would be achievable ?

If so what twist rate would be a good compromise for min /max bullet weight in each cal ? any imput would be very much appreciated . DF

your gunsmith should be able to advise on twist rates. google JBM stability and its a programme which you can work out the best twist for a bullet range. I went for 1:10 in 7mm08 which suits 130-160gn bullets.

Hmmmm according the information I have here the BSA CF2 in 7x57 has a 1 in 10" twist and it shoots the RWS 175 Gr H-Mantles quite well. It seems that the 7x64mm barrel that I re-chamered to .280AI also has this 1 in 10" twist so it will be interesting to see how it shoots.

I looked at both and was swung by the better ballistic performance IMHO of the 7mm08, twist was 1-9.5 21.5" barrel ,everything I read pussed me towards the 7mm but thats not to say that the 260 is not worth considering I pondered long and hard and for me personally and my needs the 7mm won, mine is chambered for between 120g - 165g.I have had good results from 120-140 but have not seen the need to go any higher yet.
