    Load for 20" barrel Remmy

Does anyone have a similar set up.....Remmy PSS in .308 cut down to 20".

I have set the COAL to 20 thou off the lands at 2.91"

I am using 150g Sierra Prohunter

The powder is Varget and the recommended range is 44g to 47g (though this is for a nosler BT in the Hodgdon Manual)

Should I be loading at the higher end of the range to compensate for the loss in velocity due to chopping the barrel? Or should I be looking at a powder with a faster burn rate for the shorter barrel?

    Cheers

Oh dear.......................... Ok you have to work up the laod in YOUR rifle. Pressures will limit what you can achieve velocity wise. They call it a starting load for a very good reason . I cannot tell you what will prove safe in your rifle but a powder like BLC-2 is also very useful in the .308 cartridge.

"Max" charges are independent of the barrel length. In other words, they are based on CHAMBER PRESSURE, and have nothing to do with barrel length or velocity. Therefore, a recommended "Max" load is "Max" regardless of how long your barrel is.

That's not a "bad" idea, but probably unnecessary. Cut from 24" to 20" is HIGHLY unlikely that you've lost 100 f/s. Most likely, about 50 f/s. That said, a slower powder won't burn completely in the barrel, and those 4" less will result in more muzzle blast and 'flash'. If you use a suppressor, it might be a bit (little bit) harder on your 'can'.

As BH said, start "low" and work up. If you do it carefully, omitting as many variables as you can, you will likely find a precision (some call it "accuracy") 'sweet spot' between the "low" and "high" charge values.

    Paul
