Knife blades

A friend who is an accomplished craftsman has offered to make me a couple of knives.
I have been looking at blades on the "moon raker" web-site and wondered if anyone had any recommendations.
Not looking for views as to type more interested in blade material.

This apparently ...Sandvik 12C27 stainless "surgical" steel (HRC 57)
Holds one hell of an edge.

Mull,

01 tool steel is a good all round carbon steel. It holds a good edge and is easy to sharpen. The downside is that it needs some looking after to avoid rust.

I'm not familiar with that particular surgical steel you mention. I'm sure it will hold an edge but might be difficult to sharpen.

RWL 34 is regarded by many as hard to beat for making knives. It is a stainless, so is easier to maintain, holds an edge and is relatively easy to sharpen. It isn't cheap and it isn't as easy to harden as some steels. It also requires a slightly different method of polishing than carbons. However, if its a one off piece and you don't mind throwing some cash at it you probably won't go far wrong with RWL 34.

Cheers,

Bob

If they are fixed blades you cannot got wrong with ATS34 or 440C.
these are easy to maintain and hold a good edge. one is yank the other jap.

Sandvik is stainless and has many fans, but I have seen them chipping. Mora and Swiss Army knofes use it I believe.

AUS8 (another Jap) would be my favourite at the moment for deer work If I did not already have a Fallkniven in VG-10.

Just submerge the blade in a glass of white vinegar, this will force a PATINA on the blade. it will turn black (overnight).

NO MORE RUST PROBLEMS!!!

Rgds, Buck.

PS. Carbon steel only

MB.........about as short as it is long....It all depends on what you are going to be using the knives for.

Different steels and designs are all subject to it's use and it's almost impossible to provide a recommendation.

Do your research....google 'knife steel blanks' and a few sites will pop up.

Try these sites to see if the information helps to focus it down a bit and maybe finalise your decision....

mullbiker ,if your mate is quite handy just buy a stock legnth of 01 tool steel from cromwell tools only a few quid mark a simple knife shape and cut with a grinder with a 1mm cutting disc and then shape with a flap wheel or belt sander i ground my first blade edge with a grinder held in a vice with a flap wheel and held the blank on a constant till the required edge was made after drilling heat up the blank to a cherry red and quench in oil to harden and a final honing on the blade there is a few good knife sites around britishblades .com to give a better idea i have now made a proper jig for my blades and i am making a big belt sander for the correct edge for my blades .atb wayne
