down to individual allowances, sometimes as low as 40 sometimes as high a several hundred

Some target shooters and pest controllers have allowances in the thousands of the rimfire calibre.

As far as I know the police guidelines suggest 500 to buy and 600 to hold for rimfires. And 250 buy 300 hold for the centrefires. With use you can ask for more if you can show a 'need'.

I am lucky that i can hold quite a bit of ammo including expanding bullets on my Fac
I can hold 1000 rounds for my.308 and the same in 303 and 300 rounds of .444 ,
    3000 rounds of.22rf ,
    1000 rounds of .357/38 .
500 for .22cf (Hornet) and 250 12 bore solid slugs
as said above though some Fac holders can only hold 50 rounds of ammo for there rifle it is a bit of a lottery as to how much each Police force will allow you. Some police forces will even allow you to own a rifle in a caliber but not allow you to own the ammo to use in that Rifle

that's some amount of allowance, your doing well to hold that amount...
without sounding like the Spanish inquisition how long will that allowance last you.

For some reason I can possess 1500 .224 bullets and purchase 1000 at a go (if i could afford them). I think it was an error on my first ticket and it's never been changed. in all other centrfire calibres i can purchase 250 and keep 350. .22 rimfire i'm allowed 1200 and purchase 1000.

I used to have a combined ammo holding of 15,000 assorted calibres but Lincs have cut it right down so i now have three ammo cans in storage. When Howitzer closed down i brought a lot of .270, 6.5 and 7mm bullets from them. I seem to recall it was 2800 in all. Then they decided that expandign were on ticket...

It depends my force tries to limit to 60 for centre fire unless you have a very good reason to hold more, in my case its my occupation plus a home loader so 200 in each calibre, rimfire does not seem to be a problem had 1,500 on it which I reduced voluntary as I don't use it that much these days.
