    Southpaws

Probably one for Muir but does anyone know the origin of the said expression? I know it is an Americanism for a lefthanded shooter but am curious as how the term was coined.

The term southpaw developed from the fact that lefthanded pitchers face south because basball diamonds are laid out with home plate to the west. The term has been traced back to 1885.

    Says wiki whatever

southpaw - lefthander, 1885, originally baseball slang, of pitchers, often said to have been coined by Finley Peter Dunne ("Mr. Dooley"), Chicago sports journalist and humorist, in the days when baseball diamonds were regularly oriented with home plate to the west. But south paw "a person's left hand" is attested from 1848 in the slang of pugilism.

    could be bollox though
