Thread: Squirrel?

    Squirrel?

Would someone explain the red-grey squirrel controversy? In Texas we hunt two specie of squirrel. The fox squirrel is usually red with a grey back and spends a lot of time on the ground. We also have the grey squirrel which is smaller, grey with white under and spends most of it's time in the tree tops. thanks, capt david

The Grey squirrels in the UK are considered to be an Alien species, are bigger than the native reds, and move in on their territory, spreading squirrel pox - some greys are carriers, but Reds die off because of it.

It's taken quite seriously over here.

The greys compete for food and habit. They prefer large seeded broadleaved species and when they move in the reds are forced out. As DL said the greys can carry the parapox virus which does not bother them but does Reds - when you find a dead one they look like they have mxy.

As above and also to note that the reds are being threatened in terms of survival by the greys. The greys are larger more aggressive and carry the squirrel pox virus so all in all not good for the reds.

The reds are in certain areas of the UK and there are programs to control the grey numbers and keep them out of large red populations. We call the greys tree rats...

We have 'sanctuaries' here. Reds are thouroughly encouraged, buy greys are shot on sight and a 'demilitarized zone' is enforced around them.

Hmmm ninteresting no mentioned that the grey squirrel was brought in to the UK from the Americas by a daft old Lord who fancied then in his estates trees to look nice. The Red squirrel is a much smaller species add then that the Forrestry commission grew the wrong trees and that the red squirrel is on the northern limit of it's range in the UK and the pressure from the greys which bred like flies on a carcase and the red Squirrel is endangered in the UK.

As a boy we had red squirrels breeding in our garden which backed onto the common the edge of which was a wooded belt. This was about 8 miles north of Gatwick Airport. They were getting a bit scarce even then and when one summer a bad storm brought the drey down killing the young my grandfather had a friend make up a glass case and mounted the re-constructed drey and young as a taxidermy display. This with other things like his shotguns dissappeared on his death. Funny thing is the Polcie were not interested even about the theft of his shotguns...................................... that was in 1968 ...................... oh how things have changed.

I'm 30 years old and only ever seen red squirrels once, they are our native species and really lovely to look at. The grey was imported from USA a while back and i much bigger and more aggressive than the red squirrel.
