Dual powder for 22.250 & .270

I currently use n140 for both but feel the .270 could do with a slower powder. I fire 50&55gr sp in 22.250 and 130gr sp in .270
I was looking at H414,H380 or Varget, It's less hastle sticking to 1 powder any ideas.
Cheers.

You're going to have to compromise some place: less speed from the 22-250 or less speed from the 270. You might look at 4350 powder. It will give slightly less speeds in the 250 (around 3500) but will work well in the 270.~Muir

I load the same 2 rounds and use 36g Varget in the 22-250 behind a 55g Nosler and 54g N160 in the .270 behind a 130g Speer/Nosler.

For £35? I would buy a suitable powder for each. The 22/250 and 270 are a poor fit for a common powder.

I used Varget in 22-250 (50gr & 55gr) and 7mm-08 (100gr, 140gr & 175gr) with superb results - so why not in a 270?

I only changed the 22-250 to H380 because I could get it at all times (not so with Varget) and it's cheaper.

Sorry to disagree with some posts, but too much book-reading in evidence here.

The .22-250 is a very versatile calibre, and is the only .22CF which WILL work well with a broad spectrum of powders. Handloading is all about tinkering otherwise it's just guesswork.

With 55gr - 63gr bullets in the same .22-250 I've used - order of burn-rate:-

(In part-filled cases) - Vit N133, H4895, VARGET, IMR 3031, and IMR 4320.

(In medium-filled cases) - RWS 907, Vit N140, and IMR 4064.

(In full-filled cases) - IMR 4350, RWS 904, and Vit N160.

The latter are standard .270 powders, and burn cleanly in .22-250 at the right operating pressure, just like the rest.

Presumably the Reloder series equivalents would work just as well for both calibres, but can't say for sure because I haven't tried them .

Eyefor, the 7/08 can get away with faster powders than the 270, 270 has a bigger case and a smaller bore, ergo - slower powder.

If someone wants to shoe horn a slow powder into a small case, it is entirely up to them. However, what is the point in having good rifles, expensive optics etc, to compromise on a less than optimum powder? All you are going to do is buy two tubs of one powder, instead of one tub each of calibre specific powders.

Good points.

Thanks.

Folks,
I have a similar question, I use Varget for my 22.250 loads, and have just bought a Mannlicher model L in 243 calibre, (20 inch barrel). Can anyone suggest a suitable powder for this rifle, would Varget be suitable ? any advice greatly accepted !.
Regards

not completely the same but I use N160 in 243 and 270 with excellent results.
I use one powder for several reasons.
cheaper, I dont have £70 worth of powder sitting on a shelf I neednt have
it eliminates any chance of error in loading the wrong powder

and ...it works

i use vit n140 for both my 22.250 and 243 i use 55gr with 35.5 in the 22.250 and 85gr with 38 in the 243 and they work well out to 300 yards

Lads,

Thanks for the replies, I like the look of IMR 4007 SSC load data looks good for 22.250 & .270
Cheers.....
