Twist rate

Hi Chaps
I hope someone can help with my problem
I am planning on getting a .223 for foxes I will be using a light load say 55g but the rifle comes in 1:8" or 1:12" twist rate.

Which one should I go for?

Won't make a huge difference. 55gr is a great weight choice for a 223. Most 55gr soft points will have enough penetration that
you can take a fox from any angle which is not the case with say a light 40gr varmint round.
I've had both twists and if I would buy one again I would go back to 1in12 as it seemed more accurate and less finicky. My 1in8 twist
223 is very picky what ammo is suitable, no matter what weight. The 1in12 shot 5 makes out of 6 under 3/4".

My guess,
1in8 twist 223's are in the fashion at the moment meaning
you could pick up a good 1in12 second hand at a good price.
The 1in8 might have the higher resale value.
In practical field use the 1in12 is fine to 300yds, from then on
a 1in8 with handloaded heavy bullets and good ballistic data
will outperform the 55gr bullets.
I would still prefer the 1in12 as they often shoot the cheap
hollow point ammo better if one needs masses of ammo for
crows and rabbits. These are fine up to around 250yds too.
Keep it simple....

and have been for some time. A fast twist .223 can shoot foxes and compete at F/TR. I would look to 1 in 8 or better. Regards JCS

And will be for some time to come....
Some manuf's make 1:9 which may digest lighter bullets better. My rem 1:9 shot 55fmj just fine but preferred 63gr and up.
My sako 1:8 isn't finnicky in the least.
