What is the best all round calibre for deer stalking in the UK?

What is the best calibre on the market in your opinion for shooting deer from a chinese water deer doe to a red stag? I was just wondering what people think.

    Hi there,

.30-06 - I've shot everything from Muntjac to a cow with it, and it is just a perfect all-rounder.

Everyone will tell you differently but I think its what serves you best, my personal favourite is the 7mm08.

Yet another 7mm 08 user ..................... if Carlsberg made calibers.........................

    7mm08 does it for me

I actually think a 27/08 wildcat might be perfect. Don't know why I didn't do that instead of my 260.....

140gr Accubond at 2800 from a short action rifle....

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you......

30.06, I have shot everything with it, well respected abroad and the most common calibre in the world. Largest tip range too.

    You have started something now!

This has been done to death in previous posts, you will get a dozen different answers, and never get the posters to agree
I for one refuse to get involved this time round.

Read up on the different calibres and decide which best suits your needs, if its legal and does what you want I would not worry too much what others think.

    +1 I'm afraid.

And the thing is Struan, all the other opinions that differ from mine are wrong anyway...

This is a real 'can-of-worms' question!
Whilst i would agree that the 30.06 is ideal, (and I have one myself), it's the 25.06 that comes out of the cabinet every time in preference. I've shot all 6 species with it including huge lowland reds and it does the job pefectly. The 30.06 can be excessive on the smaller animals!
