Thread: Realistically - 100gr or 90gr in .243 ??? Appreciable difference ???

    Question Realistically - 100gr or 90gr in .243 ??? Appreciable difference ???

    Folks,

I have always used Sako 90gr SP for Fallow, Roe and Munties to good effect. If I try and reload a 100gr SP in my 1 : 10 twist .243 am I (or the deer) going to notice an appreciable difference or should I just stick with what works.

My theory is slightly heavier, slightly slower might be better ???

    Any comment gratefully received.

    Cheers + ATVB

In my experience there can be quite a difference between performance between 90gr and 100gr bullets through a 1:10. It took me some time to find a 100gr load combination that would stabilise properly whilst just about any 90gr would work well.
100gr is legal for all deer species in the UK, 90gr isnt.

Although I now use 75gn Remmington accutip BT's in my .243 I used to used 100gn Norma SP. No issue with accuracy at 100yards, groups as tight as my ability would allow. I only switched to the lighter rounds to because I had the barrel shortened and was told that it may have difficulty slinging 100gn acurately. It's a 16 3/4" barrel and still fires both rounds perfectly, but the BT's were cheaper so I bought a load of them.

Why don't you just try and borrow a few 100gn rounds of some one and see how they shoot?

100gr Privi Partisan out of the Tikka T3 [1 in 10 twist.] which I sold on here a while ago. [ I won them at a stalkers shoot. ]
The rifle was sighted in to shoot at 12 o`clock on the bullseye with 75gr V.Max re-loads.

If you compare two federal factory loads, at 200 yds (IMO the maximum range for 243 on larger deer species in uk) 100gn softpoint has 1330 ftlbs of kinetic energy, an 85gr barnes Tsx has 1305 ftlbs, if you think a deer will be able to tell the difference Id like to know how! Unless you have to use 100gn for legal reasons, stick to the bullet weights the 243 was designed for, you really aren't losing any appreciable amount of performance.

I find that 95grain works best in my Blaser .243

The 90gr Sako make 3030fps so no worries about being legal in England.

Just wondering if 100gr at 2800fps would be a "better" option or am I just looking for somethin that just isn't there.

My aim is slightly heavier, slightly slower so the same ftlbs but maybe less damage to the meat ???
Is this "project" a waste of time as both the 90gr Sako factories and Hornady 87gr HPBT homeloads are great in the rifle in terms of accuracy anyway ??

I'm liking the results from PRVI's in a T3.... I think I'll be getting some of those when I've used up my stocks of Sako

Limulus, what load do you have worked out for a 1:10 twist for the 243 mate?
