    .17 hmr advice

I'm toying with the idea of a .17hmr

    Just a few quick queries....

    1. How many rounds can a barrel take until its worn out?
    2. Whats the effective range before wind affects them to the point where they are ot useable?
    3. If I get one, what make is recommended? Best all round rifle?(I tried CZ and the stocks are very short, Im 6'4" and slim)
    4. Is thee still the case splitting problems?

    Thanks

Depends on the wind, but happy at 150 - 200 yard in a moderate wind

    1) more than you will fire
2)150-175 is a good range, out to 200 you are running very low energy and the drop and drift is too large for a head shot rabbit IMO
    3) any of the usual brands will work
    4) its a cosmetic issue, doesn't affect POI, squibs are the issue

more important, why do you want it?

Thank you for all your replies

I tried 3 cz's and they were all short, the sako was alright and have a lovely triger but are pricey....

    Why I want it......

Well I am blessed with some amazing permission for shooting, I'm a keeper and this year caught 2500 crows in a ladder trap, this was probably about 60% of the flock, so would be very handy for some of the rest. I shoot a couple of hundred foxes a year, and upwards of 150 squirrels and as many rabbits as I can this year we're well into 4 figures(I was also out for 9weeks with a broken leg)

All this on an estate that has 1000acres of RTR and 43miles of footpaths (estate is 4700 acres and very populated)

So I am really thinking of a gun to have about in the day to knock over these pests as safe and quitely as possible!

Well at 15p a shot and sounding like a small centrefire the HMR is neither cheap nor quiet.

crows I can see. it is devastating on crows out to 200yds
rabbits I dont get. it skins them on site and makes a real mess most of the time. I either eat or sell mine and shoot round buildings where noise is an issue so the .22 is the tool of choice

I have the luxury of having most of the rimfire calibres and dont use my HMR anymore (its a sako as well which I agree is very pricey but absolutely great.)

I use the .22 more than anything
I use a .17M2 next. almost as cheap as .22 to feed. stretches out to 150yds very flat and fills the gap between rim and centre fire very well.

better UK focused HV rimfire for the money IMO.

ok food for thought, we sell some of what we get but do kill alot for pest control first, the pot second.

What are the virtues of a 17M2? How much are the rounds? etc etc??

"rabbits I dont get. it skins them on site and makes a real mess most of the time".

I shoot about 500 rabbits each year.
Each one is a chest shot from 40- 125 yards

The only ones that suffer massive damage are the palm size ones, the others have no apparent damage to the meat or body.

I agree, headshot rabbits are fine, bigger ones shot in the chest are also still fit for the table, some of the smaller ones do explode a little though.

One day I want to be as wonderful as my dogs think i am .....
