    .308 bullet weights

ok jumping on the bullet weight band wagon.

im hopeing to pick up a lee loader next week. but have a choice of bullet weight, powder and primer.

before i get to involved i know that my rifle will not be exactly the same as another but would like to get your general views anyway.

i shoot fallow with occasional roe.

rifle is parker hale 1100lwt .308. 1 in 10 twist.

can discount 180 gn as the recoil is just not nice

choice of bullets are nosler, hornady, sierra

    powders. vit, hodgden, and reloader

    primers. cci, federal

have got brass sorted all ready

    thankyou for your time

    pj

I have never had bad results with Sierra. Some of my most accurate reloads in various calibres have been with Sierra bullets.

I loaded my 308 with 150grn Sierra Gamekings for sika so would expect similar terminal results on fallow. It does the job on them as far as bullet performance is concerned but it will be trial and error as you know to find the load your rifle likes. Varget powder, CCI primers and Federal cases.

I rate hornady and sierra very highly in 150gr sp or spbt but you need to try them. For powders get the one you can buy locally but my personal use is viht 140 for my 308s. primers just about any. there are no real bad ones

    Varget - cci 200 primers - nosler 150grain b/t

Viht N140 is an excellent .308 powder, very similar burn behaviour to Varget but nearly half the price.
I use 150gr Sierra Gamekings and have knocked over a number of deer with them.

For consumables, give Myles at MBR Sporting a call (google it). I've found him to be very helpful.
Of course Anderson of East Grinstead is probably closer for you but they are limited in knowledge and stock, in my experience.

i was given this load by mike norris

hornady 150 grain sst, 44.5grain of vit 150, cci br2 primers, oal 2.840 this load is excellent in my rifle and knocks fallow over like rabbits with not too much damage

    thanks for replies.

am getting the feeling its 150 gn. any primer, vit 140 or 150 or hodgden varget. as for bullet i think i will start with the gamekings but am really tempted to try nosler bt but maybe thats for when im used to reloading. the video / blurb on the nosler site about the hunting bt seems to make sense but is it just sales pitch.

    223. what sort of fps are you getting. the lee data shows that vit runs slower than varget. if im right does this affect your bullet choice ie better expansion from the sst compared to a soft point

    regards pj

N140 may be a tad slower than Varget, but not so's you'd notice outside of a laboratory. Varget slips in between N135 and N140 as far as burn rate goes. N135, Varget, N140, all are good powders for 308 (among a lot of others).I have found it very difficult to make the 308 shoot badly. 44-46 grns of almost any medium burning powder, any 150 grn bullet and any primer will get you almost instant good results.

Although I no longer use a .308, I found Sierra GK 150 grain, Viht N150, CCI primers and Federal brass very good on Fallow.
