Thumbs down greed or just commercialism

it's been a long time since i lived in the uk ,but after a month or so reading through posts here ,things would seem to have taken a turn for the worse .is it really that difficult to find somewhere to shoot !! are there that many lads who do shoot , that demand is outstripping supply??? , i have read posts where deer stalking is for lease for 4 figure sums that is just to join a syndicate , there are lads charging to stalk squirrels and hares it would seem you have to enter into contracts to get stalking on some estates and the worst i read was a client being charged for missing , the charge being justified by the fact that it might be a travelling deer and the opportunity might be lost for it's carcass value in the game dealers
that is not the uk that i grew up in where vermin shooting /pest control and game shooting were there for the masses sometimes just for the asking or just for a bottle or two at Christmas have things really changed that much for the worse , i can understand commercial shooting where birds feed and wages have to be met but the prostitution of wild animals takes the biscuit imho

not that bad i think. i am very fortuneate to have made contact with a few people through work that are happy for me to shoot on their land and all it costs is biscuits or a jar of honey etc. if i had to pay for stalking i wouldnt be doing it. its that simple

*And why not? it appears some people on here would want their money back if the came up short by 1 animal at the end of the week, the stalker has done his bit by presenting the animal, we cant shoot them aswell

    * Granted that is a poor reason but my above comment still stands.

You know what its like nowadays, everybody striving to make money by whichever means they can, cash is king at the end of the day.

I think you have just proved the OP's point. It seems to me that when times get harder, people either become fixated on money or lift their heads a bit and see beyond it: sometimes it's down to circumstances, but more often it's just how they are.

I've got the rose-tinted spectacles on at the moment, though, as a very kind member on here PM-ed me out of the blue a little while ago to offer me a bit of kit I'd been asking about, and wouldn't take anything in return even when pressed.

It may be better put by saying that missed opportunities will not be refunded.

As long as everything is clear before the client gose stalking then i feel its ok. The greedy ones are the ones that add bits on as and when they feel. If you out with a guide and he asks you to take a shot as its as close as we are going to get and you miss you had better be were that you will pay for it.
Greed is filling the shooting world like never before and the demand is great. So the future looks gloomy for those that want into stalking cheap it is not going to happen.

The question was "greed or just commercialism"

Charging for providing service and sport would be "just commercialism"

Stinging someone for 378 after coming "up short by just one animal", when there's a contract in place which says categorically that you'll be refunded this amount for that shortfall...that would be "greed" In my humble opinion.

Heaven knows I've paid for stalking often enough and not even had the chance of a deer and I was perfectly happy to have paid... but... if the deal had been.. No deer and you can have your cash back sir. I would have been very unhappy if my refund had not been forthcoming.

As for paying to kill vermin... I'm thinking about charging guys to punch paper. That's just commercialism.

If I take you out stalking why should I not be paid for my time guiding you? The quarry is irrelevant. Its my time and my time is worth money, its called having a job you might have heard of it.

If, as I suspect, most paid stalks are pretty informal, i.e nothing is put in writing and signed before a stalk, what is stop you (as the paying guest) just flatly refusing to pay any add ons?? Such as the missed shot payment, just tell them aye righto, pop them their tip and day fee, jump in your motor and off home. What can they do about it ?
