    Red Stag shot near Chelmsford

On the PW forum, a discussion about a big Red stag shot down in Essex, the photo appeared in the BASC magazine :

Seems like he had been around and admired for a while.

Sad story. Here on the Isle of Wight we potentially have a similar problem with a small number of farm escape Reds which could if left alone form a small resident population.

Although not a pigeon shooter myself I thought that one of the fundamental ethics behind shooting for sport was the management of surplus wild populations rather than exterminating whatever happens to be rare in the locality?

not narrow minded at all, shows they have some ethics.

In my mind an anology be would be having a pair of blackgrouse appear on a hill farm, the nearest other blackgrouse are twenty miles away. Joe bloggs sees them, his mates see them, they all think how nice, hope they breed. Now Fred Bloggs also sees them, knows that they are the nearest of their kind for a considerable distance but thinks I want one and goes and shoots the cock bird. Not illegal at all, but it does not stop Fred Bloggs from being a complete knobber for doing so. (in the pricket sense of the word )
