Thread: Tree rat with 7mm-08

    Tree rat with 7mm-08

    Bored on Saturday afternoon.

Long wait in the wood with nothing appearing across the rides - but then a squirrel pops across to a feeder.

Roughly 125 / 130 yards (142 paces). 7mm-08, 100gr hollow point at about 3200fps and the results as below.

Small entry hole and a much smaller than expected exit hole

    Strange.

I'm a bit shocked by that, I would have expected a cloud of fur and blood, and nothing but a red smear on the ground.

Not enough resistance to initiate expansion of the bullet. It would go through a squirrel like a bit of tissue paper, methinks.

Yeh I hadn't thought of that. I sometimes get that with the .17 on rabbits, the size of the exit wound depends on what it hits on the way through.

Had to smile. A couple of years ago down peebles way the man was sitting in a highseat watching 17 sika working closer. The lad in the next highseat over, unsighted, got bored and popped a crow. The man was not chuffed to say the least. He could have popped the stag at any time but was just waiting as they worked towards him. oooooooooops

I knew I was alone in the wood - otherwise I wouldn't have done it. You never know what another shooter is waiting on?

I have to agree on the lack of resistance / expansion replies - but on all other occasions with this round the crow / magpie / rabbit whatever has just been red mist. Just seemed weird - and the tree rat did not move from where I shot it. It wasn't 20ft up the ride!

pencil-holed the bugger, another reason to be careful neck shooting deer broadside, below the vertebrae the neck tissue is very soft and thin - this could easily happen and you think it was a miss...not to start that old thread again

Spot on, no expansion there what so ever.
