    308 Looking for more velocity?

I have a Tika Varmint 308 with a 16" barrel. The load / head i am using at the moment is 150gr Hornady SST / 46g Vit N140 Powder, 2.650fps. It shoots a nice tight group with this load but falls of the cliff at 200yrds, is their faster burning powders out their? or can anybody point me in the right direction where to go regarding gaining more velocity?

2650 for that barrel length isn't bad, maybe try h335, magic for short barrelled 308 or 7-08.
Otherwise just hold the muzzle a bit up.....
No matter how fast the bullet you'll need to compensate at some distance.
In Germany some are winning competitions with only 41gr N140 in a 155/308. Just add a few clicks.

Have you had a look at reloadersnest ? N140 loads are at http://www.reloadersnest.com/query_pw.asp?CaliberID=57&Powder=Vihtavuori+N140 but http://www.reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=57 gives you all powders, all bullet weights.

    Anyone for 3800fps+ ???

A reloading manual?? That 16" tube will be your downfall. Change your zero (try 3" high at 100M) and learn your trajectory.~Muir

The T3 Varmint (short barrel) MT comes with a 510mm (20") barrel. It's not much shorter than the standard 570mm (22.3") version.

    Have you cut it down?
If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.

Yes iv'e had it cut-down to 16" don't get me wrong i knew this would be the case with regards to lost velocity! I think "Muir's" reply is the way to go! (Change your zero (try 3" high at 100M) and learn your trajectory) or i may save up for a scope with tactical turrets?

46 grains of N140 is probably your maximum load. I use it on a 30 inch target barrel and get around 2920. It is the length of the barrel. Just set the sights a bit higher, it will still have tonnes of energy for any British species out to 600 yards plus.

You might also try Hodgdons BLC-2 as it works well in the .308. Just be aware that with the mod the muzzle flash might be something to behold.

    Von,

have a look at the new Superperformance ammo loaded by Hornady, in .308 it's loaded with 150grn SST's and it's suppose to push them out at 3000fps from a standard 26inch barrel. I've bought a couple of boxes to try.

    Jase.

Be warned. Hornady has had reported to them some pressure excursions with the Superformance ammo. ~Muir

(And...What is "standard" about a 26" barrel?? Most factory rifles these days are 22" and pressure gun standards are 24 inches.)
