BONE OF CONTENTION: A stag surveys his domain. Gamekeepers say numbers are suffering due to aggressive shooting. Conservationists disagree

AGGRESSIVE shooting of deer to save plants and trees is a “national scandal” endangering jobs and the Highland economy, gamekeepers claimed yesterday.
The Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA) said red deer numbers were already suffering because of two harsh winters – and now conservation policies, aimed at protecting young forests, are adding to the problems.
Their comments provoked a row with conservationists who insist the over-culling claims were not true.

    G
ood to see the SGA starting to ask the questions. Maybe SNH will finally start to have a look at what's happening under their noses.

I've read the report, I have a lot of time for Peter Fraser, he's a topping bloke. But the report is p***, it's a bunch of emotive anecdotes. I know I'm never too appologetic about deer culls, but I do agree that we need to take a far more strategic view towards deer management. SGA have stirred a lot of media interest, unfortunately the report is very week and if compared to the previous press release on deer fencing is very confusing as they counteract each other. If SGA want to play this political game they are really going to have to up their game as this is a very poor effort. A pity.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure if I can post it on here, I'll get confirmation before I do.

At what point is culling deer not aggressive?

I'm certainly not a lefty but it is well written and does highlight a few issues. Interestingly in my office this article got a fair bit of applause. The vast majority of the general public probably agree with him, something we should take on board

I think that's all anybody ever argues for. Stirring up media interest is possibly the only way the SGA are going to achieve this as if it's not in the public eye then nothings going to change.

If you are going to stir up public interest, you have to have something substantial to give the politicians other wise you'll fall flat on your face. I know I was a founding member and on the SGA committee for 7yrs. The public will make the politicians sit up and listen, you then have to say something intelligent. SNH will tear this apart!

Was anyone at the AGM on Fri?

Why can't SGA, BDS, SCA all take a united stand on this? This will give far more credibility as well as obtaining some more specialist expert opinions.

I'd be more carefull when mentioning names and yes I do know Michael!

It's not a case of whether he has ever been in Sutherland, it's more that he is an inteligent and skilled writer who is capable of swaying public opinion.

"Despite growing demand for wild venison from Michelin chefs, deer are regarded by many in conservation and forestry circles as pests as they trample young trees."

This made me laugh out loud .
