    .300 win of firearms cert

    Chaps

A quick question. My firearms cert gave me permission to acquire a .300 win. In the end I went for a .300 win mag but would I have been able to purchase a .300 win short mag? My certificate did likewise for .22 and .223. not specifying .22lr or .223rem is this commonplace?

    Cheers

As you've filled the vacant slot your question is hypothetical. You'll never know.

As for the query about 'commonplace' I would say not, but my licensing department is on its' toes.

    The unanswered questions are:-

    1) Would the RFD have gone along with what is a very obvious switch?

    2) Might the FLD have spotted it when both parties notified the transaction?

    3) If the answer to 2) is 'Yes' would you have received some grief?
If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.

I would advise you to specify the calibre/cartridge that you wish to acquire. That avoids all potential for misunderstandings or worse. Best wishes.

In the case of the ".300 Win" on the ticket, I've only ever seen either a .300 Win Mag, or .300 WSM (short win mag) so I can't see how wither would have been an issue.

There's a world of difference if you have a slot for a ".22 rimfire", and try and buy a .22 centre fire.

Thanks for the answers so far, as the .300 win is hypothetical (very happy the win mag) I'm not too fussed. On the .22 and .223 however I would like to know your thoughts, I've had one RFD trying to flog me a .22 hornet and a .223 win in the past (after looking at my certificate) but I went for the .22lr and .223 rem in the end. Could I have chosen the others?

You posted the slots as .22 and .223. The first could only be used for a .22rf (I'm not sure if you'd get away with a .22WMR), and the second by the .223 Rem you bought.

There is no .223 win - there is a .225 Win which is a semi-rimmed case using standard .224" bullets.
If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.

Ok thanks for that haven't come across the .225 before this is the round I'm reffering to...a .223 Winchester super short magnum.

Yep - know of the .223 WSSM, and have an example. There's a .243 and .25 in the series. They haven't been a roaring success.

It sounds like your RFD was trying to shift sticking stock. I don't now if it's in order to substitute a WSSM for a standard .223/5.56x45 - but surely no-one could switch a .22 Hornet for a .22 slot?
If I'm going to be accused of it then it's just as well I did it.

.223 Rem/5.56 Nato runs out at about 1300 ft.lb. WSSM pushes out a thumping 1900 ft.lb. Not exactly interchangeable. Most FEO's would see .223 to mean .223 Rem. Most will never have heard of the WSSM!

my 22 hornet is down on my cert as 22 hornet dont think you could have got a way with geting one with a 22 slot. my cert is away for vairiation at the moment but in sure my 22 is down as 22lr. iv found with moveing around diffrent forces are a world apart so its hard to say.

my mate had 22rf and a 17 barrel so he could get a sako quad he went into a gun shop that was in a diffrent force and the lad sold him a sako quad with a 17 barrel as he didnt have 22 in stock. on the lads cert it stated to purches 22 rifle and 17 barrel and because he got the rifle in 17 his force went mad and removed his 22
