Thread: effect of barrel length

    effect of barrel length

i have a general question relating to barrel length and MV. in theory if you had two identical rifles in all respects except for the barrel length and used the same ammo from both rifles. Which would have the highest MV for the given round, i.e. the longer barrel or shorter. i dont have access to a chronograph to test the effects myself.

Keith, longer should be faster - variations in individual barrels will have some effect. You coould have two absolutely identical Sauer's (for eg) in 6.5x55 shooting the same ammo, there could easily be 50-100 FPS of difference in the MV's.

In my experience, the smaller the case the less difference barrel length makes, shortening the barrel will have a lot more effect in a 270 than a 223.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you......

Keith, I should be. We are planning on ringing some gongs, one of the lads has a new RPA to play with. I am sort of half hoping to get the 222 barrel onto the Blaser by then. I am trying to find somewhere to get to the 500 yard line.

I need to load 22/250 ammo first though, I am getting pretty low.

There are cows on the land I use for a range, normally they will stay in one section but this herd invoke the right to roam big time. Otherwise we could have headed up there, sure let me know

As a very rough guide, every inch of barrel difference will be equal to 100fps.

KSB: Here is a brief piece which explains how to work out the effect ofbarrel length in a given calibre.

    I hope that helps.

    Nothing like it.

25-50FPS per inch possibly, dependent upon case size/bore volume relationship.

I took 2.5 inches of my 260rem a couple of years ago. Cost me 40-50FPS chronographed. This is actual observed, not based on internet theory.
