    243 Load Needed

    Hi all

I ordered my new 243 last night and was just wondering what loads for roe would be good. I am looking for something that is going to minimise carcass damage.

The rifle is a Remington 700 Stainless synthetic with a 24'' barrel

    Thanks in advance

    Wayne
If at first you don't succeed, reload

I have had good results on Muntjac and Fallow (and paper !) with

    Sierra GameKing 100gr
    35gr Varget
    Federal Premium primers
    2780fps

    22" barrel

100gr Sierra pro hunter 37 grains Hodgdon H380 remington magnum primers

95 gr Nosler BT 36 grains Hodgdon H38O magnum primers you can substitute the H380 for the same weight of RE19
and the magnum primers for CCI large rifle this is quite a mild load but accurate.

However you should not take as Gospel what others say start with minimum loads and work up as every rifle is different also maximum loads are not always the most accurate.

that seems like an awful lot of varget for a 100g?

Possibly not. I was using 32.5 grains of Varget with a 95 grain BT. It never made a really tight group but was ok out to about 130 ish yards but i wouldn`t trust it further. As someone i know said "That`s hardly enough to push it out of the barrel"
I`ve moved on to IMR4831 with the same bullet. I won`t give out weights as the load is still under developement and i`m not experienced enough to hand out advice.
I`m having much better results now.

Not wishing to court controversy, but what will cause the minimal carcase damage you desire is good shot placement.
No doubt the usual cries of 'the bullet's not suitable' will follow my post, but I can only say that I've used various .243's with 70 grain Ballistic Tips for Roe for maybe 15 years and don't experience smashed carcases at all.

It does seem like that but I worked up slowly and appear to have no issues with regard to pressure signs.

I posted a thread on here a while ago about appearing to have a slow barrel / rifle !! It does seem to be the case as
I need that much powder to get a legal velocity !

It is a wee bit above the published max of 33.7gr but seems to work well in my rifle (Sako A2 with 1:10 Border Archer 22" barrel fitted by Border).

As ever - everyone should be aware not to blindly copy anyone else's recipe !!

36 gr of h4895 behind a 95 gr nosler bt on top of federal bench rest primer will print clover leaf in my remington and have taken fallow out to 430 yds with it but as said before its bullet placement. Thro the shoulders and the front end is jelly , thro the ribs and almost no marking or blood , exit hole less than 40mm . So pick your shots , can be a mangler placed in the wrong area , cheers
