    Egg shoot @ Diggle

Well it was a good turn out today at Diggle not bad conditions for once, apart from the rain and wind now and then but learned alot about distance shooting with a deer calibre and didnt do too bad.

Well at least no1 hit the egg so next year its double prize money so thats an added bonus.

There were alot of us there using deer legal rifles.

    Mostly 260, 308, 6.5x47 etc

The winner was using a 260Rem, third place 6.5x47, dont know about 2nd.

Interesting to see that in the main, the fall of shot was circa 2 -3 inches off the egg (to the right) and almost level, so apart from reading the wind, most people got their elevation pretty much bob on.

    500 yds (at the egg)

The 500 yd shoot I had 1 MOA right wind on and hit the bull on the midrif of the PD target, however missed the wind drop and that put me out by 3 inches on 2nd and 3rd shots.....

Fall of shot on egg was 2 inch off.......maybe next year

Target is Prarie dog - about the size of large hare standing up. Dog is actually, 13.5" tall, by 6" wid at widest point on body

Two scoring areas head and body

    - head target is diameter of 2.25" with the bull being .75" diameter.

    - body target is diameter of 3.5" with the bull being 1.5" diameter.

The egg, is a hens egg.

You start with a competitor number, (which is your target number)

Shoot 3 shots at the dog at 100 yds (no sighters)

Shoot 3 shots at the dog at 300 yds (no sighters)

Shoot 3 shots at the dog at 500 yds (no sighters)

    Lunch

Hens egg on black backer, 500 yds, no sighters, one shot....

Held once a year at Diggle and its a fun shoot, but a test of your cold bore zero, your wind reading skills and grouping ability, plus bottle depeding on which scoring area you go for.....

    Overall, its just fun,

Yes it was all good fun even thoe I was using a stalking rifle I had lots of fun. You learn a lot by shooting distance with your kit and talking to the weather hardened pros up at diggle about reading the wind, good day by all carnt wait for next year. Oh the fly shoot is coming soon so carnt wait to shoot that comp.

I'm quite please with my score (think i got joint 13th out of 27 competitors), and not too far away from the egg. and i drove 192 miles each way to get there. not bad for my first time on a range with a newish stalking rifle

    lessons learned...

a fallow is a lot bigger than an egg
when your wind coach says "aye up lad a minute ive right got wind ere", he means aim about 5" to the right, not the left
northerners aint that bad after all

    a few more pics.

    heres my dog

    100y
first shot went high and right
second shot compensated into body bull
third shot compensated into head bull.

re-adjusted my 100 yard zero (something to do with altitude/smog i think?)

    300y (24 clicks up)
    1 in body bull
    one just outside body bull
wind blew one left of target on paper

    500y (34 more clicks)

aimed to the left of target (oops)
    2 on paper
    1 in sand

a suspicous person might say that there was a plot against the southern contingent as they were doing to well..........
