legal calibers on the continent

I'm going to put a variation in for a larger caliber that I'll use on large deer but will also want the option to use it abroad, any ideas? Cheers jon

Any 30-06 will fit the bill. Up to 150 gn for all species of UK Deer and 180 for most anything else elswhere.
Just change the bullets to suit the quarry.

My Spanish friends tell me you can't use a 30-06 there.
Try a 300wm instead. Bullets widely available, and its not deemed a military round so you don't have to worry about using it in France and Spain.

Hello nemo.
I know it''s not likley to be your first choice but have a think/look at the 8/57 JS. same ballistics as the 30-06, and very good selection of heads if you reload also still popular on the continent, for Boar and RED deer. also if you look on Holts online sale catalogue , and you want a traditional rifle as Mod's are not legal over in Germany. Sometimes you will get a bargain. I got a customised / sporterised , Mauser K 98. circa 1937 , and immaculate condition for £126.00p. Also for £120.oop you can get a new barrel from Mauser in 9.3-64. Which gives you a real big hitter cheaply. Even better and more popular for big ****ed of boar.

30 06 would have been the one but I was informed it was classed as a military round by some European countries

Off the shelf and without having the "Military cartridge" problems then you have 270 Win, 280 Remington, 7x64, .300 magnum of various varieties (Norma, Winchester, Remington, Weatherby, H&H), 8x68S, .338 (except Lapua).

You don't say larger than what though so it's bit difficult to help as best as one perhaps could.

Ive just gone through the same thing and have settled on a .270 due to as stated above milatery calibres are a no no in a few places

No military calibres (Old or new) may be used or transported through France. .30-06 is an old military calibre. Don't know about other countries though. Cheers.

Within the last 6 months was in Spain on a shooting trip, the party of six guns, at least two of which, myself included were using 30-06 or 308. But it may be that the regulations do not exclude foreigners from using such calibres.

I live next to France (so have the non-military rounds issue) and the battery I am building up will be a 7x64 and a 9.3x62.

Note, if you want to get a .338 of any form, you won't be able to use it on MOD ranges.

My advice would be to try and get something to compliment what you already have.

In my case the 7x64 is fast and flat whilst the 9.3x62 is a big thumper.

9.3x64: Is quite a powerful round and is real competition for a .375 H&H but even over here on the continent is rather specialist. (The 9.3x62 isn't quite so powerful but works very well and even the US manufacturers are starting to produce ammo for it which will help with the cost).

Above all, have fun choosing.

Nemo,

I briefly thought about the issue of military calibres in foreign countries when I bought my "big rifle".

I bought a 7mm Rem Mag. There is a massive choice of bullets and brass available if you reload. It's fast, flat shooting, accurate and, with the right bullet (and placement of course) will stop anything you might find in Europe. The unmoderated recoil from a normal weight hunting rifle is fine (for me at least) albeit at the upper end of the spectrum. With a mod or break its mild.

I think the .300 Win Mag might be a better choice if you were ever thinking of taking it to Africa, but for Europe, the Rem Mag will do everything you need it to.

The cartridge was created in the 1960's so all the reloading data is for modern strength rifles, which get the best out of it. It's never been a military round. Most main stream manufacturers build rifles in the calibre because it is (apparently) very popular in the states. However, you might have a wait to get one in the UK. One other potential drawback is that, unmoderated, they are very loud.

As others have said, have fun choosing.

Cheers,

Bob

300 win mag doesn't carry problems with getting expanding on your ticket but bigger cals like 9.3 and .375 can be a mega pain in the ar5e

Really? I was told by the NRA (Here could be the problem) that MOD ranges had banned all .338 chamberings from civvy use.

Or is it just the NRA assuming that Bisley is the only range worth bothering with in the country again?

Anyway, Nemo, sorry for the slight diversion but it is always worth checking what you can use at your local range before going to the effort and committing the funds.

ide want something around the 308 size ,7mm sounds ok .i wouldnt be using it on any ranges but as its been brought up there is a .50 cal range on warkop army range in cumbria that has a civvy club

+1 for the 300 Win Mag

30-06 is a good calibre but you wont be shooting it in France. My 300Win Mag will shoot 150gr, 165gr and 180gr rounds with ease.

Regards

7mm rem mag. Very versatile round. I've used mine extensively in Europe and amongst other things have shot Chamois and driven boar with it and you couldn't really get more different types of shot. I have an S&B 2.5-10 x 56 on top which compliments the versatility of the round very well. In my view it is the best allrounder for europe.

Cheers

Rich
