    Ideal Fox control rifle

    Hi Folks

I am looking at getting a Foxing rifle, what calibre is best,is it .223?what rifle/set up? I really like the look of an AR15,looks like a real "workhorse type of tool",I have a Sako 75 in .308 for stalking etc, whats your thoughts?

I have owned two southern gun AR's one was a 20" Bull and the other A 16" carbine. They both rolled foxes ok but the weight, balance, rattles, noisy cocking, extra bits to clean etc meant that they were only used when playing. Your sako 75 would be much better. My most successful fox gun was a cz527 american cut to 18" in .223.

Thanks for that, what sort of range was cz good for?

I only need to shoot to about 200 yards at night and short barrel cz was good for that with out having to hold over. I have also use .204, .22-250, .22-250AI they have all been great cartridges. The .204 and the .22-250 would be my choice if you want a bit more range without going into 6mm territory.

That lists the main reasons why I wouldnt want an AR15 for foxing, thanks for the heads up....why on earth do the military use them???

I use .222 excellent accurate round and cheaper than .223. The rifle is Tika T3 hunter with S & B 8x56 reticle 8. Also use it on CWD, Munties and Roe no problem.

If you are foxing only, why not try .20TAC, or .17Fireball?

Another .222 user, as I can't reload here I'm only using the Sako 55gr sp & 50gr arrowheads which are a tad more costly than .223 fodder, but I'm very happy with their performance out to 300 yards - (150 to 250 is my average shot) & no bark in comparison to the 223, if I needed anything to reach out that bit farther I'd go back to a 22-250.

Get a 204 mate. I have had a 22.250 and shot a few 223's. Both great calibres, if I ahd a choice of 223 and 22.250 the 22.250 would win hadns down. However since getting a .204 Im now completely sold on the cal. Its is as flat as hell out to 300 yards and packs one hell of a punch with little or no recoil. Magnum adn I went out yesterday and shot 20 rabbits between 275 and 310 yards. Its so accurate and with the minimal recoil the confidence levels of taking the shot in any situation resting on any surface etc. Ive shot quite a few foxes with it so far the furthest being 270 yards adn it dropped on the spot. Great round.
