    20inch 270

Evening i recently brought a t3 270 its a good rifle and its accurate but it has a 20inch barrel, will this rifle loose much velocity? some have said about 100fps others have said 270 needs a minimum of 22inches and that 24inches would be ideal for maximum velocity ect, do you think a 270 is at a disadvantage with this barrel length? i use home loads and am trying a faster powder as some reckon you will not get a complete powder burn in this barrel length. I have switched from rl22 to rl19 under 130grn sierra gamekings, i have got a bit paranoid over this and i may think of getting a 24inch border barrel.

Shoot it over a chronograph and you can tell us.
    Brian.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you......

Give me your powder weight's and other details and i will put it in quick load and tell you the results.

20" should absolutely fine with the right load, especially if it's already grouping well. You should see circa 3000fps with the right load.

H4350 looks very good. Near 100% fill ratio, and burn rate, using less powder than RL19. My QL doesn't list RL17, but I think that would also be better.

+1 The only real way to find out.
It's the calibre of the shooter that counts not the calibre of the rifle.

Would I cut the barrel of a rifle chambered in 270 Winchester to 20" ......................... Nope

    Would I build a rifle with a 20" barrel in 270 Win ............................... Nope

    Do I own a 270 Win chambered rifle with a 20" barrel .................................... Yes!

As I found the fireball at the muzzle rather off putting and also did not want the nice Rose Wood cap scorched , not even sure if that's possible, but this was my second rifle purchase I think. So after a bit of digging in the reloading manuals I loading some Nosler 130 Grn Ballistic Tips for normal shooting on the range over a charge of H-380 ball powder. Worked very well and the rifle and load shot well even at 600 yards on Henley Park, Ash No3 and Bisleys century range.

Of curse this was pre the stupidity of the expanding ammunition farce .

Mine is a BSA CF2 Stutzen and I wondered then and still wonder why they chambered cartridges like the 270 Win and 7x64 in such a short barrel. 6.5x55, .308 and 7x57 surely would have been more suitable .

Using a faster powder can mitigate some of a short barrels short comings but you will run into the pressure wall faster too.

I am confident no target species will know the difference.
realistically you are unlikely to see any difference in trajectory or bullet expansion at stalking distances going from factory 3100fps to 2800fps

most of the .270 reloaders I have spoken to load at the 2800-3000 range anyway.

must be very comfortable and pointable is it?
I would leave it alone and just shoot it

No annimal will ever feel the diffrence and A LOT more comfortable to use. certainly when moderated.

I use a 19" Barreled 270 and have no problems with either velocity or muzzle flash the load I use is 46.0 grains of IMR4895 and a 130 grain bullet if you check quick load you will see this provides a 99.8 % burn within the barrel.

    46g sounds very low for a .270 case ?
