.223 and .222 rem not much difference either tbh. no necessary need to go .222 mag

For some reason the US military did not accept the .222 magnum which is was developed for so seeing a good thing it was brought to production commercially. the .223 Rem is a spin off of the .222 magnum.

you'll be hard pushed to find a new gun chambered for it.
I have a 22250 also and its king.
the 222mag is an old manlicher short action a lovely light gun fitted with a small 3-9x36 zeiss MC on inch rings with no mod.
it makes a great "armed recon" gun which will take squirrel under a feeder to fox@ 250m and even enough punch for a humane dispatch (england) if i see a very lame roe deer while out reconning.

223, shorter cartridge same horsepower. I presume that is reason enough for the military.
222mag is quite popular in Germany.

    Correct.

The 222 Rem Mag has a slightly "improved" shoulder shape and a longer neck. Capacity is very similar to the 223 as John says. Interesting and relatively rare little thing.

Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you......

The US Army didn't adopt the 222 Mag because it fell outside the over all length limits with a 55 grain bullet. The 204 is based on the 222 Magnum to keep folks from forming their own brass from .223.~Muir
