A very good write up, and having met Chris, I can confirm he is about 7 foot tall!

I do hate statements like this though:

"Since they’re classified as a pest, there’s no closed season on muntjac".

I'm fairly certain that there is no official classification of them as a 'pest' or 'vermin' species as yet and they should therefore be treated with the same amount of respect given to all other deer. Seasons are based around the breeding cycles of deer and based on welfare grounds. As muntjac don't have a recognised breeding cycle (other than continuous!) there is no reason to have a closed season - that's all!

I was surprised by the artical from the Daily Mail, not their usual form and for once put as all in a good light.

I quite agree, but would have no problem if they referred to them as an invasive non-native species.

That's about as balanced a piece as I have read on stalking in the popular press, the complete opposite of the rubbish printed about boar hunting in the Scottish Daily Record discussed in another thread.

Quite a reasonable article of course it won't convince the tree huggers but then again nothing will. I don't much like the Photoshopped image of the stalker shooting what looks like 25 feet away completely in the open, unless he was their keeper in a deer park it just wouldn't be possible, Joe Public is likely to think you simply walk up to the poor trusting deer and blast them.

Photo, agree about the photo, it goes nowhere to showing the skill involved. That said, the rest of the article is excellently written, balanced and fair. I'm pleasantly surprised to see such a piece appear in the Mail.
