they are very strict as to what can be shot and kupps (young) MUST be shot before the mother so nothing is orphaned.
you are told what is to be shot on the day.
ie mother with young, everyone has a radio so is kept in touch what is in the drive. Both young (if twins) are to be taken before mum and getting it wrong can carry penelties. So as she moves through the drive hunters try and kill both young before the mother is taken
The swedish hunts only young moose are to be taken, NO mothers and only bulls under 4 points. (that was last season this might be different).

Every Area in Sweden has a Älg management plan. A älgförvaltningssområdena ( Moose management area) is a min of 50000 hektar in the south of Sweden and 150000 hektar in the north. There is a count in each management area and the number to be culled is then worked out from the number counted. The cull is then divided up ,depending how big your hunting ground is between the hunting teams in a the management area. About 50% of the cull will be calves in most areas. We have 700 hektars in our hunting ground and a cull of 1 adult and 2 calves. 80% of the älg cull is done in the first week when most of the adults will be shot. Calves have a longer season than adult Älg so no rush to shoot them and they are a bit bigger after Xmas. We don't shoot any bulls with 4-8 points in this area so as to keep the level of middle aged bulls up. This has shown a great improvement in the quality of bulls shot over the last 7-8 years

Do you then shoot the adults before christmas leaving the calfs to fend for themselves?
