I started getting some sooting whilst working up a load for my 6.5x55 using varget. Was only noticeable at 2 weights in the "mid" range, once I moved out of that range (.5gr) it cleared up again - also only happened for me with S&B Bullets at 140gr. Was fine with Sierra and Privvi bullets.

If the load works, does it matter?

I have used factory ammo which results in some blackening around the neck so it's not specific to reloaded ammo.

If the cases have been used a few times and not re-annealed then they possibly will not seal properly, but I do say possibly.

I only worry when it is going down the side of the case.

The only cases I never annealed were the turned brass from NFDS for the 577/450 when I had the Swinburn. Have never annealed any others and not had problems.

Whoops sorry forgot I did annealed some 303 brass when re-forming to 6.5x53R .

\i bought some "once fired" lapua brass that would show soot right down to the head!

the load was mild but not low
The cases were annealed by Mr Taylor on here and the problem went away.

    what is your load?

Hodgsons lists 64-68gr of non short cut 4831 so that doesnt look low (are the SC loads different?)
