Bravo Flytie. At least you can see that the questions asked have not been answered very well. Also those that have been warning the SD members about these dangers are not trying to sell anyone a dog of any sort . Maybe that at least say's something . Regards Widu .
TO STRIVE TO SEEK TO FIND AND NEVER TO YIELD .
Widu, I am a bear of very little brain, and I read a lot more than I post. I too have a dog, not a specialist deer dog but a labrador, who with a little percivearance has been taught to follow and find deer as well as game and wildfowl. I would not be without her.
But there is a problem with some supposedly accredited and registered imported scent hounds. This has been raised in various sporting magazines and forums. People are being gulled into paying huge sums of money for their "grey import" style of scent hounds. Make no bones about it, there are puppy farmers out there who just can't wait to part you from your hard earned cash.
I for one am glad that this issue has been raised and made public.
As to the training of deer dogs, there are huge rows taking place in Germany as this is written, with a study done on tracking by a university that gives the lie to the accepted practise of training deer dogs.
Does this affect me? No!
Am I interested, yes!
Will it affect the type of dog I buy next? No!
Would I like to see the questions posed on this thread answered? Yes!
Do i know the breed regulations and organisations in Germany? No!
Am I glad that some people on this site do? Yes!
There is a level to training these scent hounds which will never affect me. I do not shoot anywhere near enough deer for it to ever become an issue with me. But I am interested in the methods used, and the arguments for and against.
If someone on this site was to promulgate unsafe methods of reloading, there would be howls of anguish from the cognecenti. If "Grey Import" cars were to be sold as being legally imported there would be action taken against the posters. But when polite questions are raised on threads and remain unanswered I find it hard to understand the vitriol being heaped upon the questioner's heads?
And if people are unaware of the hugely strict and arcane breed standards, training methods and organisations on the continent perhaps they ought to be grateful for those that have taken the time to find out so that the dog buying public can be protected and informed.
I have yet to read anything in these threads that is offensive, but as I say, I am a bear of very little brain.
