    Deer Teeth

Explanation of chewing in deer and how teeth wear. When the teeth are erupting can make a fairly accurate assessment of age if you know when shot after that estimate based on experience.

Lateral view of jaw showing interlocking of cheek teeth cusps.
Birds eye view of lower jaw.
Lateral view of lower jaw. pm 1 is actually is 2 by naming convention
View of different jaw to show dentine, brown
Dental pad that the incisors partially cut food against(Grass buds etc) then tear off
Showing uneven wear on teeth due to way animal chewed
These 2 photos illustrate the movement of the jaw when the deer is cudding. The cusps cut and the table of the teeth grind

This photo shows the sharpness of the cusps and how much they project. Outside edge upper teeth and inside edge on lower teeth. The tables of the teeth actually slope in slightly. The upper teeth and lower towards the tongue . The cusps of the upper teeth are longer on the cheek side and lower teeth on the tongue side. The upper teeth are larger it gives the lower teeth a larger surface to work against We judge the age after all the permanent have erupted by the wear but bear in mind it does depend on the type of forage and soil type for the grazing species

    Teeth and age (of deer)

Fascinating! I have a number of fallow jaws lying around and the sharpness of the cusps intrigued me.

Can you provide any more info on the criteria/method for judging age from dental findings?

    Many thanks,
