What call best 7mm08 or 6.5x65

    Hi All

Just picked up some ground that's got quite a few Galloway reds on it so decided to get a bigger calibre than my old .243. I already have a variation for a .308 but have decided its not the one for me because of the banana trajectory. I'm thinking of either the 7mm08 or 6.5x55 so would like your thoughts.
What's important to me is a flat trajectory and low recoil if thats achievable from these rounds. I do like the .243 so would like something that shoots similar to that with a bit more knock down and possibility of taking longer shots if conditions are right. Availability of factory loads isn't really an issue.

    Thanks
    DS

Well I hope it's 7mm08 because that's what I applied for last week!

Hmmm I am assuming you have a typo and meant the 6.5x55 SE (Swedish)?

Personally the 6.5mm is s bit close to the .243 (6mm) so i would be looking at 7mm calibre. I would not however be considering the 7-08 as I can see not particular benefit to it over the established and reknowned 7mm Mauser (7x57mm) also known as .275 Rigby with the right profile bullet that is .

Now don't get me wrong I really like the 6.5mm (.256") and own three such rifles in different chamberings but as I say I feel it's too close to the .243 to be much of an improvement in your case.

Flat shooting out to what distance?

Both calibres you ask about are no flatter than a 308(dependant on bullet choice/weights)

you may need to look at the faster calibres.

    I have a 7mm08 btw.

    Recoil

Whats difference in recoil between .243, 7mm08 and 6.5x55 with a mod on or even a 30/06

The big reds in Galloway take some stopping especially in the forestry narrow rides but the distances are not going to be great so I would go with a 30-06,270 or a 308 all will flatten reds up to 200yds if shot in the right place.
Recoil with a mod is mild with all three calibers

Like Wardy I'm curios as to what you think you'll be gaining here?

Even when taking the normal different bullet weights into account there will only be circa a half inch difference in drop at 200yds which could easily be gained/lost by mounting a scope higher or lower.
They'll all have a max point blank of around 280yds.

I've got a .260 and a .308 former for stalking and it is very effective but I wouldn't argue it's any more effective than a .308.
Why do I have one? Cause I can

Well If it were me, and I was only shooting deer, Id go the 308 every time.
The banana trajectory you refer to is more than managable (if it is anymore noticable in the field than a 7-08)
I have a 260 and a 308 and they both kill Red Deer with gusto, however if I am after a Stag then I grab the 308 every time.
As Clark McGhie said, 308 is about a perfect caliber for Red Deer. (If you dont know who Clark is, Google Him)
