Thread: What length

    What length

Getting the barrel on my 270 chopped, 1 in 10 twist and only using factory ammo. At the moment it is 24inches long plus a T8. What can I sensibly shorten it to? My thoughts are 20 inches. What has anybody else shortened theirs to and how has it affected things?

    Hi Al,

I have a 243 rem and it had a 24 inch varmint barrel. Shortened it down to 20 inches and fitted a t8 and it is still every bit as accurate as it was

Personally I wouldn't go less than 22" on a .270 (I did it and it worked nicely).

if you cut it it will kick more bang more and have droped the power down example if i cut 2in from my 7mmrem mag i will have a 270 rem mag dont do it bud every thing you have to gain from your 270will be lost

Had them in the past cut down, never noticed them kicking or banging more when the mod is on. The ones i've had i never had the option of what length to have them cut at but i have with this one. Hence the reason for asking about different lengths

Hi Ranger, just my thoughts, I had a 270wsm shortened by 4.5", and effectively turned it into 260 or a 7mm-08 (I know they are different sized calibres before anyone starts lol).

The velocity went from 3150fps to 2800fps, which defeats the object of the 270 and burning 60 ish grains of powder.

If you want a short, compact rifle - get one, but the 270 needs its barrel length to work properly.

I ended up rebarreling mine, as it was no different to my 260. ( other than .013" in calibre) both shooting 120 and 130g at approx 2800 ish ( chrono'd), but the 270wsm used 62 grains of powder to do where as the 260 used 46 grains.

Its now shooting the exact same load 130gn nosler B/T or A/B at 3150fps. So I found I lost 70ish fps per inch of barrel chopped off.

Hope that helps, as I say, just my expensive experience.

My factory tikka t3 in .270 comes with a standard 20inch barrel, it kills things perfectly and i don't feel i have lost anything by not having a 22 or 24inch barrel. At stalking distances it makes no difference. Its pretty flat shooting with factory ammo out to sensible ranges.

most people that I know with .270's that homeload run them at 28-2900 anyway
cant see it being an issue,

I dont run mine at silly speeds, they dont kill any better for the extra 2-300fps and unless you are shooting 600yd range days the velocity drop wont be noticeable at stalking distances

its your rilfe, chop it down to 18 if you want
so long as you are happy with the result.

i had one at just under 20 inches. and the ase mod soon took most the flip out of it. didnt really test it with home loads. because i had 60 facotry ammo cheap for it. but accurate was fairly good. with soem loads and a recrown i think it would have shot silly little groups.
